UFC 137 Results: Nick Diaz Is the Future Welterweight Champion

G DOct 29, 2011

It was a long and bumpy road for Nick Diaz on way to his main event bout with BJ Penn at UFC 137.

Diaz, who had a title shot lined up with Georges St-Pierre, let it slip out of his hands by missing two mandatory press conferences.

UFC president Dana White went on to remove Diaz from the championship bout, eventually leading to the matchup with Penn.

When action began at UFC 137, Diaz appeared to be hesitant against Penn early as he sat back and ate strikes.

But, when the second frame began, it was Diaz who stole the show.

Diaz demonstrated one of the best performances of 2011 by landing strike after strike to nearly every part of Penn’s body.

The dominance continued as the third and final round was under way, and once again it was Diaz who began to unload on the former UFC champion.

While Diaz failed to finish Penn, he displayed why he is arguably the best striker in mixed martial arts today.

After his spectacular performance, Diaz called out current welterweight champion St-Pierre and stated he believed his injury was a scam to get out of his fight with Carlos Condit.

If Diaz can be on his best behavior, the chances of him being next in line for a title shot are likely. And, while St-Pierre has dominated nearly every opponents that’s come his way, so has Diaz.

In fact, Diaz has now won 11 consecutive fights and is on a fast track to the top of the division. To Diaz’s credit, St-Pierre hasn’t fought an opponent with better striking skills.

There’s no denying St-Pierre is one of the greatest of all time, but, if Diaz continues his dominance, he could very well be the next UFC welterweight champion of the world.
