BCS Rankings 2011: Georgia Bulldogs and More Teams That Will Ascend in Standings

Mike ChiariOct 29, 2011

The BCS standings fluctuate on a weekly basis, and that will certainly be the case again this weekend as a number of upsets or surprising results occurred. Many teams in the mid-to-lower levels of the rankings picked up big wins and could be in line to move up.

It's almost impossible to predict how the computer will react to these wins, but you have to believe that there will be some movement. Here are three teams that will ascend in the rankings following big victories on Saturday.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

The No. 14 Nebraska Cornhuskers have had an excellent season with the only blemish being a blowout loss to the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers. The Huskers had a chance to get a measure of revenge against the No. 11 Michigan State Spartans after the Spartans upset Wisconsin. Nebraska took advantage of the opportunity by dominating the Spartans 24-3.

Quarterback Taylor Martinez and running back Rex Burkhead were excellent on the ground and the Huskers defense shut down Kirk Cousins and the Michigan State offense. There is no question that Nebraska is one of the preeminent one-loss teams in the country, and they should be in or near the Top 10.

Oklahoma Sooners

The No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners' National Championship hopes may have been dashed last week in losing to Texas Tech, but they bounced back in a big way by destroying the No. 8 Kansas State Wildcats by a score of 58-17. Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones threw for five touchdowns as the Wildcats were decimated defensively.

Not only will the result cause Kansas State to fall in the standings, but it should vault the Sooners up a spot or two as well. With so many undefeated teams still remaining, Oklahoma won't be able to move up much more than that, but the Sooners are certainly on par with the Oregon Ducks in terms of being the nation's best one-loss team.

Georgia Bulldogs

A week after entering the BCS standings, the No. 22 Georgia Bulldogs were faced with a tough challenge against the rival Florida Gators. It took a fourth-quarter touchdown, but the Bulldogs were able to extend their six-game winning streak and improve to 5-1 in the SEC, good for first place in the East division.

Georgia played well against Boise State and South Carolina early in the season, but opened with two losses. The Bulldogs have been perfect since and have a very favorable schedule moving forward. Georgia should certainly move up in the rankings by virtue of its great SEC record, and that ranking may only get better moving forward.
