Donovan McNabb's Presence Will Negatively Impact Christian Ponder's Development

Brian MaziqueOct 29, 2011

So much for veteran tutelage.  It is more likely Donovan McNabb is hoping to see Christian Ponder go down in a heap or flat fail miserably.

McNabb is not embracing his role as a veteran willing to tutor the young QB. Ponder didn't really do much to help foster the relationship when he stated in the preseason that his intentions were to be the starter. It created an aura of competition there. I think it is unfair to ask McNabb to drop his guard. That isn't what athletes or competitors do.

McNabb made it clear he believes he should still be the starter for the Minnesota Vikings in an interview with Andrea Kramer, due to air Sunday morning.

It is delusional thinking on McNabb's part, even though he didn't play terribly. Especially not as bad as many people are claiming he did.

McNabb's had 62 percent completion percentage was higher than Matt Stafford, Jay Cutler, Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez. McNabb's QB rating of 82.9 was higher than Cam Newton, Philip Rivers, Flacco and Matt Ryan.

So, while he may not have been headed for Honolulu, he certainly wasn't stinking up the joint. The problem is that the team was 1-5 and obviously not headed for the playoffs. They drafted Christian Ponder with the 12th pick overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Vikings need to find out what they have sooner than later, especially with the possibility they could Suck for Luck.

Minnesota has several holes; they need to find out if one of those is at QB. McNabb is not the QB of the future and the Vikings are not a team of the present. That said, he isn't a good fit there anymore.

While trying to move him at the trade deadline would've been the best way to go (sixth or seventh round pick), that time has passed. A release may be the best option for both parties at this point.
