2011 Breeders' Cup: Horses People Are Underrating Most
The 2011 Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs is one of the most exciting races of the season and with a purse of $5 million, it’s also one of the biggest prize races in the world.
Running this race at 1.25 miles (2012 m) on dirt makes this race one of the most intriguing of the year, but there are horses that have dominated on Churchill or similar tracks that aren’t getting the respect they deserve.
While favorites like Uncle Mo and Havre De Grace are showing that they are top dogs by clearing house with the odds makers, there are some long shots that deserve a long look for those interested in laying a few dollars down.
1. Ruler on Ice
After placing in six of his last seven races, this 2011 Breeders' Cup has the feeling that Ruler on Ice could be the horse that steals the show.
The winner of the 2011 Belmont Stakes has the track record to deserve more respect, but the 21/1 odds show that not too many people think this horse has the chance to win the race.
2. Stay Thirsty
This horse has placed in eight of his last 11 races and has won three during that span of time. This horse had great showings in almost every race he has run, but isn’t getting the numbers you would expect from a favorite.
While 13/1 odds aren’t terrible, this is still far too low for one of the most talented horses in the field for the Breeders' Cup. Watch for the experience of running on Churchill downs to play into the result of the race.
3. To Honor and Serve
While To Honor and Serve is a 13/1 underdog in this race, I would feel very comfortable laying down on a wager on this horse because of his track record.
To Honor and Serve has placed in eight of the last nine races he has participated in, and his five wins over that stretch—including his last two in a row—make him a serious contender for this Breeders' Cup win.
