UFC 137 Fight Card: What Mirko Cro Cop Must Do to Beat Roy Nelson
Heading into this weekend, Mirko Cro Cop has every intention of putting on a great performance, especially considering it could potentially be his his last bout in the UFC.
It is no secret that the former Pride star's skills have faded over the last few years, so putting him in a matchup with heavy-handed striker Roy Nelson certainly doesn't sound like the odds are in his favour. However, the Croatian has shown signs of improvement in his last few fights, and he still does have a chance to defeat Nelson.
Cro Cop must make Nelson constantly move in order to time and counterattack his strikes. Nelson tends to throw overhand rights, so the Croatian needs to be aware and move around the Octagon to create distance and space for himself.
Nelson likes to set up his overhand right while stepping in with two jab feints, and one way for Cro Cop to counter is to be more elusive and use more angles as he moves backwards, as opposed to moving on a straight line where his opponent could have more of a chance to land.
Opening up the distance allows Cro Cop to set up his shots and keep his opponent out of his range, and prevents Nelson from utilizing the clinch.
Another weakness Cro Cop could expose is Nelson's lack of cardio. The former IFL heavyweight champion has looked terribly slow during his past performances, and his technique and punching power decrease considerably as the bout continues.
Cro Cop should be the aggressor and constantly utilize feints and angles to keep Nelson guessing, but more importantly, keep him active. Cro Cop should set up power shots and make more use of kickboxing to mix up his offense, as well.
Although Cro Cop is no longer the credible fighter he once was, it doesn't mean there will not be opportunities for him to finish the bout.
Whether or not it is Cro Cop's last bout on Saturday night, rest assured the Croatian will look to bring out a memorable performance.
