Top 5 Topics for so Very Clever Guy's Girls: Week 9

Hilary LiDestriOct 28, 2011

OK, So Very Clever Guy’s Girls- let’s get right to it.  I’m four hours from the opening pitch and need to give you the 411.

The Texas Rangers are one of eight teams in MLB who have not won a World Series- that ends tonight.  God willing, we will be praising Nolan Ryan and the amazing job he has done lending his leadership and stalwart work ethic to a team greatly in need of both.  I can’t thank him enough, even though I’m still a little pissed my Detroit Tigers (who represent a city in such dire need of something good) got knocked off by him.  However, tonight’s the night.

It's not even Saturday and I'm already mad I'm not going to be hanging out with Chip Brown, Erin Hogan, Chad Hastings and Sean Adams- easily some of the coolest and knowledgable sports guys I've ever met.  If you are able to tune in to ESPN Austin, you can find them there.

The Undefeated Landscape

1 of 4

OK, Saturday will be a bit interesting in that the top two teams, LSU and Alabama are on a bye (this means they have the weekend off) so the spot light will shift to some teams who deserve a shot at the spotlight.

I’m hoping despite the fact the University of Texas will be having a suckfest in Austin that at least it will be a good game.  Texas has a great chance of putting up a “V” against Kansas who has only won two games and neither have been conference play.

Last week we watched the unbeaten teams drop from 10 to 8 when Wisconsin and Oklahoma were handed their first losses.  The top 6 teams in the poll are still undefeated but that landscape is likely to change as Oklahoma State faces off against an undaunted Robert Griffin III and the Baylor Bears and Stanford heads to USC.

How Week 8 Shook Up the Polls

2 of 4

Oklahoma plummeted to #9 (I can’t remember the last time they were sitting that low) after what can only be described as an old fashioned ass whuppin’ by Texas Tech.  I have no doubt the Sooners didn’t give much thought to the visiting Red Raiders but it wasn’t long before they had to sit up and take notice of the fact Tech arrived in Norman to show them a thing or TEN.  Not only was Tech prepared but formidable.  Impressive play.

Michigan State, what can I possibly say about my alma mater that hasn’t already been said.  In one of the most dramatic wins in college football history, State managed to badger Wisconsin out of what I was relatively certain would be a Victory.  When Cousins went back for a Hail Mary, I was literally on the edge of my seat.  My head would have been in my hands if not for his sheer certainty.  As it turned out, the pass was not completed but bounced off on of the Badgers and into the hands of Keith Nichol- who apparently was the intended receiver as they called it a complete pass.

Game Day this weekend will be with Michigan State again this week as State heads to Nebraska.  Tough game, but Nebraska lost to Wisconsin and State just beat Wisconsin.  Taylor Martinez versus Kirk Cousins.

The Heisman Heats UP!

3 of 4

Wow- what a difference a week makes.  The Heisman picture has changed a great deal.  We have people in there I had never heard of (kidding) until now.  Clemson is lighting the world on FIRE and they have two candidates in the top ten.  Quarterback Tajh Boyd is front loaded with offensive talent so it’s no surprise he’s making a scene.  Sammy Watkins is absolutely explosive.  Those much talked about losses, Wisconsin and Oklahoma moved Clemson higher in the AP (associated press) rankings than they have been since 1981.  This is a defining season for the Tigers and if they can produce a win at Georgia Tech, they will be 9-0 for the first time since 1981.  They seem like a team with something to prove and they are proving it.

Oh yeah, we were talking Heisman and I got sidetracked with Clemson’s Cinderella story.  So, it’s no surprise, Andrew Luck is still holding fast at number one.  Grrrr.  Here is where we stand according to ESPN (not me).  Trent Richardson, the running back from Alabama (totally hate Nick Sabin) is making headlines- we need to watch out for him.  Kellen Moore the talented SAM (surface to air missile) from Boise State is forever on radar, yet moving conferences from WAC (Western Athletic Conference) to the MWC (Mountain West Conference) might hand him nothing but two years worth of notice and recognition.  However, TCU brought some street cred to the MWC last year and with these two teams playing hard year after year, the spotlight might shift.

Tahj Boyd as discussed earlier.

Russell Wilson hanging in despite the late night loss to Michigan State (YEAH!!!)

My personal favorite on this list is Robert Griffin III- why?  Well, simply, his character.  You don’t see a lot of it in sports and he has the type of humility that runs so deep he might take it straight to the NFL, where it is sorely needed.  As I’ve always said- s*&^%! Rolls down hill and you can see it happening everywhere in the NFL from the Cowboys to the 49ers.  With egos in charge, how can we expect the players to behave with anymore grace than the owners and coaches?  Barf.

My Picks for Week 9

4 of 4

My picks for tomorrow?  Well, I’ll take A&M over Mizzou, I’d like Michigan State over Nebraska and frankly, it might happen, WANT to see RGIII (Robert Griffin III) whip up on the Oklahoma State Cowboys- but will it happen?  Texas MUST win, Michigan over Purdue- though Purdue had an excellent performance last week, Wisconsin over Ohio State is almost a gimme, but as I’ve explained before- everyone in the Big Ten has a rivalry with the Buckeyes- we all hate them, so emotion could be an issue and with Wisconsin limping a bit- it could be a ball game.  Stanford over USC.  By the way, I am so happy I was wrong about Texas Tech and Michigan State last week.
