Bill Cowher Rumors: New Coach Wouldn't Solve Miami Dolphins' Problems

Thad NovakOct 28, 2011

Bill Cowher hasn’t coached an NFL game since 2006, but his consistent success when he was the Steelers’ head man has meant that almost every losing team in the last five years has coveted the current CBS analyst. To that list, we can (unsurprisingly) add the 0-6 Miami Dolphins.

The NFL Network reports (via Twitter) that Miami owner Stephen Ross has contacted Cowher’s agent about replacing the disappointing Tony Sparano. Cowher, apparently, isn’t interested in discussing a job with any team that still has a head coach (i.e., all of them, until the season ends).

Even if the Dolphins landed Cowher, though, a quick turnaround for this team is beyond even his capabilities. Miami has too many personnel issues to contend with in the near future, whether Sparano, Cowher or anyone else is in charge.

Chad Henne’s season-ending shoulder surgery is just one more indicator that he is not a functional solution at QB. Unless the Dolphins land Andrew Luck in the draft, the passing attack will continue to consist of Brandon Marshall not getting the ball thrown close enough to him.

The ground game hasn’t fared much better, and while it’s too early to give up on rookie Daniel Thomas, it’s also reasonable to question how much he can do for an offense that doesn’t have a lot in its favor. Even the line, the team's strongest unit on paper with two first-rounders, Jake Long and Mike Pouncey, hasn't looked like a high-level group this season.

Cowher might be able to turn the talents of LBs Cameron Wake and Karlos Dansby to better account, but the defense doesn’t have too many playmakers either.

Without some extensive roster overhauling, Miami will continue to be a losing team stuck in what might be football’s toughest division.
