CFB: Case Keenum Joins Heisman Race After Shocking 9-Touchdown Performance

Kyle VassaloOct 28, 2011

This may blow your mind, but Andrew Luck isn't the only player still involved in the Heisman race. While Heisman hopefuls continue to drop like flies, a new dark horse has gone from barely being on the Heisman radar to being a legitimate contender.

Case Keenum threw nine touchdowns in a 73-point spectacle against Rice. He's now got a ridiculous 32 touchdowns and 3,219 yards. Luck has played one less game, but it's hard to believe he's going to improve on his 20 touchdowns and 1,888 yards enough to pass Keenum statistically.

Are we really to believe that some quarterback from Conference USA can actually compete with Luck and fellow frontrunners like Trent Richardson for the Heisman?

You better believe it.

Houston is slowly but surely making their way up the BCS rankings. Like Boise State, they haven't exactly squared off against the best the nation has to offer, but as teams like Oklahoma falter, undefeated Houston is on the fast track to finish this season in the top 10.

Keenum has put Houston on the map. He commands not only the nation's top passing offense, but the top scoring offense as well. Numbers in the Heisman race aren't everything, but they're certainly a key factor, and Keenum is blowing the competition away.

Luck faces a tough Trojans team, a dominant Oregon squad and will likely see the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Pac-12 Championship. Going unscathed is going to be nearly impossible, and dropping even one game removes Stanford from the national championship hunt.

With the dominant performances Keenum has put on display, he's thrown himself right into the Heisman mix and even one minor slip up from Luck will make it impossible for voters to ignore what Keenum is doing in Houston.
