Case Keenum: Why the Houston Cougars QB Deserves to Win the Heisman

Matt BowenOct 28, 2011

Case Keenum of the Houston Cougars can't stop breaking NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision records. He amazed once again on Thursday night as he threw nine touchdowns en route to a 73-34 win over Rice. Keenum tallied 534 passing yards in the game. He deserves to win the Heisman at season's end.

Keenum, a senior is leading his Cougars to national recognition as the team just keeps winning because of his arm. Behind his nine touchdown performance, Keenum set the FBS record with most career touchdown passes with 139 and counting. With four games plus a bowl game remaining, Keenum will easily throw for over 150 career touchdowns.

Do yourself a favor and make sure to catch Case Keenum while you can—he's a can't miss.

Here are reasons why Case Keenum deserves the Heisman.

No. 4: Case Keenum Threw 9 Touchdowns in One Game

1 of 4

It's hard to measure the magnitude of what Case Keenum actually accomplished against Rice.

Given, Rice is one of the nation's worst at covering the pass, but Keenum threw nine touchdowns and was pulled from the game with eight minutes to go.

To put things in perspective, some college quarterbacks don't throw nine touchdowns in a month. In fact, Keenum's nine passing touchdowns in one night is more than four ranked teams' starting quarterbacks have all season. These teams are No. 8 Kansas State, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 14 Nebraska and No. 19 Penn State.

Numbers don't lie and Keenum's numbers say it all.

No. 3: He Has Yet to Throw for Fewer Than 300 Yards This Season

2 of 4

Case Keenum hasn't thrown for fewer than 304 yards in a game this season.

He's thrown for 350-plus yards in six games and more than 400 in four of those games.

His 534-yard outburst against Rice in Week 9 was Keenum's cherry on top. If he had played the last eight minutes of the ball game, he may have eclipse 600 yards.

What is this kid capable of next? College football fans will have to wait and see. The Houston Cougars play 1-6 UAB next week.

No. 2: Case Keenum's Numbers Are Undeniable

3 of 4

Case Keenum leads the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in all-time total yards with 17,692 and counting.

This season, he leads the nation with 3,219 passing yards. Most impressively, Keenum has thrown just three interceptions this season. Only three!

His completion percentage currently stands at 71.9 percent, which is good for sixth in the nation. Among those quarterbacks ahead of him in completion percentage, Keenum has thrown 303 passes—that's 75 more passes than the next closest competitor (Kellen Moore, Boise State).

While it is true that the Houston Cougars are in a weaker Conference USA, Keenum's numbers are undeniable. It's not out of the question that Keenum may end up with 5,000-plus passing yards on the season. If he accomplishes this feat, he will do it for the third time in his storied career.

No. 1: Houston Will Finish Undefeated

4 of 4

The Houston Cougars are currently 8-0 on the season, and they'll finish undefeated heading into the bowl season.

The Cougar's four remaining opponents have a combined record of 12-17.

With Houston finishing undefeated, college football fans will get a case of the what if's. What if Case Keenum and the Houston Cougars got the recognition they deserved? What if Keenum played at a bigger school? What if there was a playoff system?

Who doesn't want to see Keenum put up giant numbers against an SEC team?

Expect the Houston Cougars to earn national attention by the end of the season. Regardless of school or competition, Keenum should win the Heisman.
