Ranking the Greatest All-Time Traditions in Oregon Football History

Nathan LoweryOct 27, 2011

To fans of big programs such as Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Florida, Oregon has no tradition at all. They just play football.

To Duck fans however, we see history and tradition of one of the strangest, quirkiest, and funniest program in the nation.

The Duck, the O, the noise, all of it is tradition to us Duck fans and we love it. Despite the troubles the program has had, Duck fans have stuck with their team through thick and thin and still love everything about it.

7. The Uniforms

1 of 7

Thanks to the support of Nike, Oregon stepped away from the normality of having a home, away, and one or two alternate jerseys, to doing something new each week and for the most part, Duck fans love it.

Yes every now and then you will get the occasional jersey combination that is just plain hideous, but that's part of Oregon for you.

Oregon was the first school to take a different approach to uniforms and we've stuck with it. That's the best representation for Duck fans that you will find; sticking with something no matter how much scrutiny you receive.

6. Kenny Wheaton's "The Pick" Video

2 of 7

Before every game at Autzen Stadium, a video of the iconic "Pick" by Kenny Wheaton is played.

"The Pick" is possibly the most iconic moment in Oregon Duck history, it was the turning point for us. From there on out the program would absolutely enter each day with a different mentality, one of winning.

Hear it in Jerry Allen's voice as he calls the play as it happens and you will understand what that meant to Oregon.

5. Moshofsky Center Pre-Game Tailgate

3 of 7

Before each home game, the Ducks partake in a pregame tailgate in the Moshofsky Center, their indoor practice facility.

The tailgate allows Duck fans to meet personnel involved in the football program and get fired up before each game.

At the end of the tailgate, the football team walks through the Moshofsky Center before heading to the locker room.

4. The Autzen Noise

Known as one of the loudest stadiums in the nation, the "Autzen Zoo" is one hectic place.

The fans go nuts every single game and have earned the stadium the motto of, "the place where teams go to die."

"

"The biggest thing I remember about that game is the crowd. The crowd noise is crazy up there. Honestly, any other away game I don't really even hear the crowd. Oregon was the only place where it really got on my nerves."

3. Win the Day

5 of 7

The motto that Chip Kelly instilled in his players in 2010 has transformed itself into something more than just three words, it has become a mentality.

Since the Win the Day started appearing last year, Oregon is 18-2 and has become one of the main contenders in every year's BCS Title Race.

The Win the Day slogan can be found throughout the Stadium and is something that the fans just eat up every time someone mentions football in Eugene.

2. The O

6 of 7

Everyone flashes the O.

The O has become the staple of the Oregon football team and carries a cult status with it in Eugene.

Songs have been made about the O and it's an intimidator and nuisance to opposing fans and teams. No one wants to see someone doing an O at them if they're not a Duck fan.

1. The Duck

7 of 7

This Duck does it all.

From his motorcycle entrance to his push-ups, Oregon safely say they have the greatest mascot in the nations.

At the start of each game, the Duck rides a motorcycle to the 50-yard to fire up the crowd and team.

Every time Oregon scores, the Duck follows up by doing a push-up for every Duck point on the scoreboard. Considering Oregon's high-scoring offense, he is one muscular Duck. Last year he got up to 2757 push-ups.
