B.J. Penn: It Would Be "Awesome to See" Georges St-Pierre Move to 155 Lbs.

Mike HodgesOct 27, 2011

Since Firas Zahabi said that he would prefer Georges St-Pierre move down to 155 pounds as opposed to moving up to compete in the middleweight division, rumors have been circulating regarding the champion's potential move.

The idea of witnessing St-Pierre move down is intriguing and it certainly has a him put on a few lightweight competitors' radars, including former UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn.

"The Prodigy" was a featured guest on MMANation on 106.7 The Fan and gave his thoughts on the possibility of seeing St-Pierre compete at lightweight.

"With Firas saying that Georges St-Pierre can make 155 pounds easily, it's easy for me sit here and call BS on that, but I guess Firas would know much better than I would," Penn said. "That would be pretty amazing if St-Pierre made 155. That would be awesome to see."

Penn has a history with the French-Canadian, as he has competed against him on two separate occasions. His second bout with St-Pierre saw Penn overwhelmed by the champion's size and wrestling ability that allowed the champion to earn a TKO in the fourth round. Since then, Penn has found success at lightweight and welterweight, respectively.

However, if the Hawaiian picks up a victory over Nick Diaz this weekend at UFC 137, he could challenge St-Pierre for a third time, but Penn said there is more reward in beating him at welterweight.

"I think the place you'd want to fight Georges and be able to beat Georges would be at welterweight because even if you did fight him at lightweight and he was depleted down and say you did beat him, you would always have to do that welterweight fight anyway," he said.

Although another title shot is not in Penn's immediate plans, he still intends on entering his bout with Diaz and putting on a good performance.
