Brandon Jacobs Stupidly Sounds off About Future with New York Giants

Wes ODonnellOct 27, 2011

Brandon Jacobs has always been a brash and fiery player since entering the league in 2005.

He came in as a fourth-round pick with unique physical skills and played with a chip on his shoulder.

That chip, however, has disappeared in recent years despite what Jacobs actually says.

The Giants have noticed too. And although Jacobs graciously re-worked his contract to help the Giants re-sign his best friend Ahmad Bradshaw this summer, he hasn't been rewarded with the ball much.

Jacobs and the offensive line certainly haven't helped matters. Jacobs has been battling a sprained MCL and it took Bradshaw six weeks to earn his first 100-yard rushing game behind the new offensive line.

But through it all, the Giants are sitting atop the NFC East and getting healthier by the day.

Their defense, which has the potential to be absolutely dominant with a healthy Justin Tuck and quick-learning Prince Amukamara, has elevated this team in spite of their mediocre offensive play.

So why Brandon Jacobs decides to open his mouth now (although he's never been good with timing), just as he is getting healthy, is absolutely bewildering to me.

The running back was recently interviewed by Men's Fitness and had this to say about Bradshaw getting more reps and his impending return to the field:

"

Well, he’s not being used as much as he can be, either. It’s a very confusing thing. I’m just here, doing the best that I can do to help my team. I come out to win; it’s up to them whether or not they want to use me. I just can’t wait to get a true opportunity to get out there and show myself again, you know? Next year, hopefully. This is a business and you have to look at it that way. I just want to get out there and show myself. It’s going to have to be for another team, but it is what it is. It comes with the territory.

"

Another team? Jacobs is under contract with the Giants for another season.

When asked if he thought he'd be a Giant after the contract was up he said, "No, I don’t."

That would be fine if Jacobs were playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins or St. Louis Rams; three teams that are a combined 0-19 on the season and already looking towards April's draft.

The Giants, however, are in the thick of things and about to embark (after the Dolphins game) on a ridiculously difficult home stretch.

Not only will the Giants need Jacobs during that run, but they need him to buy into what they're doing.

The Giants are short on emotional leaders and Jacobs is one the original members still playing for Big Blue from the Super Bowl run.

He needs put his emotions in check, shut his mouth, strap on his helmet and get back on the field.

He'll get the rock when he earns the rock.
