NFL Week 8 Predictions: Which Defensive Players Will Rack Up Sacks?

John RozumOct 27, 2011

It's unfortunate during this era of pro football, but regardless of how studly any defensive player may be, the offense is always going to trump them regardless.

So with that said, let's give some props to the dark-side and more specifically, the sack-masters.

Jared Allen, Vikings (at Panthers)

Jared Allen currently leads the NFL with 11.5 sacks, and for as much as opposing offenses like to throw the ball now, it only increases the odds of him getting more.

This week, the Vikings travel to Carolina and play the Panthers, who also will drop back quite a bit, especially with a lackluster ground game.

Therefore, expect Allen to pressure Cam Newton all game, because if he can get to Aaron Rodgers like he did, Newton will be feeling the heat as well.

Prediction: Three sacks

DeMarcus Ware, Cowboys (at Eagles)

It's not just DeMarcus Ware on the Cowboys who can apply a pass rush, however, he is by far their best man for the job.

On the year Ware has eight sacks, and although the elusive Mike Vick is his opponent this week, Philadelphia has a very weak offensive line in terms of pass protection.

Therefore, expect Vick to be under duress quite a bit from Dallas, but most of it will be courtesy of Mr. Ware.

Prediction: Three sacks

Aldon Smith, 49ers (vs Browns)

Although Aldon Smith only has 5.5 sacks this season, the 49ers' LB has acquired all of them in the previous three games.

Against Cleveland at home this week, San Fran must force pressure on QB Colt McCoy as the Browns' best chance at moving the ball is through the air. Smith, along with DLs Justin Smith and Ray McDonald will be in McCoy's face all game long.

However, expect Aldon to perform the best as his rookie status keeps him under the radar of the pass-blockers.

Prediction: 2.5 sacks

Von Miller, Broncos (vs Lions)

If there's one consistent thing the Denver Broncos can hang their hat on, it's the play of rookie LB Von Miller. For starters, his first NFL tackle caused a fumble in Week 1 against Oakland, so it was for certain that Miller was going to be a dominating force.

And he hasn't disappointed. Through six games Miller has compiled six sacks and had two against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

This week the Broncos host the explosive Detroit Lions, however, QB Matthew Stafford won't be as mobile with a bum ankle. Expect Miller to force a lot of pressure, because blitzing will prevent big plays from having any time to develop.

Prediction: 2.5 sacks
