NFL Week 8 Predictions: Alex Smith and QBs Who Will Flop

Ryan RudnanskyOct 27, 2011

Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers are on a roll.

They're 5-1 behind a burgeoning defense and an effective offense and they are already showing they know how to win the close games.

I expect the 49ers to continue rolling against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8, but it won't be because of Smith.

Smith is one of three quarterbacks I expect to disappoint in Week 8.

3. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys

Tony Romo got back on track in Week 7 with two touchdown passes against the St. Louis Rams, but he faces the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8 and the the Eagles' pass defense appears to be rounding into form after an ugly start to the season.

The Eagles' secondary is giving up just 217 passing yards per game this season and the team has 18 sacks. The rush defense probably won't be very good the rest of the season, but the secondary and pass rush is way too talented to disappoint moving forward.

Although the Eagles faced the quarterback-deprived Washington Redskins in Week 7, I still liked what I saw from the secondary, which played with much more fire than previous weeks.

Romo is simply an inconsistent quarterback, and he may be surprised by the Eagles' defense in Week 8.

2. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

I'm still not entirely convinced Alex Smith has all of a sudden become a franchise quarterback.

He went off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4, but for the most part Jim Harbaugh has kept him on a leash.

Against a good Detroit Lions secondary in Week 6, Smith went 17-of-32 for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The 49ers are mainly winning games with their defense and running game right now. And Smith faces a Browns defense giving up just 172.0 passing yards per game this season.

1. Kevin Kolb, Arizona Cardinals

I'm one of those people that believes Kevin Kolb is better than he's playing right now.

There's no doubt Kolb's been atrocious so far, completing under 60 percent of his throws for seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

He had a nice bounce-back game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I expect him to fall back down to earth against a Baltimore Ravens defense giving up just 13.8 points per game, the best mark in the league.

On top of that, the Ravens have given up just 186.8 passing yards per game and allowed four passing touchdowns while racking up six interceptions.

Kolb will struggle in Baltimore, just like quarterbacks before him have.
