Beanie Wells Injury: RB's Likely Return Won't Help Cardinals Top Ravens

Michael DixonOct 26, 2011

What has been a dismal season for the Cardinals just got a slight glimmer of hope.

John Boes is reporting that running back Beanie Wells' injury from Sunday isn't as bad as was initially expected. Wells expects to play this week against the Ravens

That's a good thing. You certainly don't want to see injuries happen. So, when an injury looks bad, it's nice to see a player get back into action as soon as possible.

But will it help the Cardinals do anything against the Ravens? That's highly unlikely.

I know that the Ravens just showed a really vulnerable side against the Jaguars on Monday night, but that doesn't necessarily relate to the game against the Cardinals.

For one, the Jaguars game was in Jacksonville, on Monday Night Football. The crowd and team were certainly more invested in that game than they will be in most others.

This game is in Baltimore.

Also, while the Ravens have issues, the Cardinals aren't the team to expose them. Their defense is not as good as what Jacksonville has, and Wells is not the kind of player that Maurice Jones-Drew is.

Also, while the Ravens' offense looked abysmal, their defense did fine. If a team allows no touchdowns and 12 points, they are going to win more games than they will lose. Three of those four field goals that the Jaguars allowed were outside of 50 yards.

That kind of thing is just not likely to happen again.

Also, if Wells plays, how effective will he be? This is a guy who's never rushed for more than 800 yards in an NFL season, coming off of an injury. Does that, coupled with the fact that he's playing the Ravens, give anyone any confidence?

It's nice to see Wells' injury isn't as serious as some originally thought, but don't expect to see him impact the result of Sunday's game in any way.
