NFL Week 8 Predictions: Which Defenses Will Lock Down Opposing Offenses?

John RozumOct 26, 2011

Anytime a team has a defense that is virtually impenetrable, there's always an increased chance for them to get a W.

Because for all those fans who love offense, your team isn't going to win if they can't stop anyone. That said, here are three defenses who lock it down in Week 8.

Baltimore Ravens (vs. Arizona)

If there's any defense that can have a shot at the Super Bowl without an offense, it's the Baltimore Ravens. They rank No. 3 in rush and No. 4 pass defense, and although Week 7 was a loss to Jacksonville, it wasn't their fault.

This week however, the Ravens catch a break with the 1-5 Arizona Cardinals who's best asset is being ranked No. 13 in passing offense. QB Kevin Kolb has been underachieving, but so has their running game, which will get shut down in Baltimore as well.

It will be surprising to see the Cardinals score more than 10 points on the road, because Arizona hasn't seen a sound defense like this yet in 2011.

Ravens 24, Cardinals 7

Houston Texans (vs. Jacksonville)

This is a game between two solid defenses, but the Texans not only have the home-field advantage, but they have a better offense and just as good of a defense.

The Jaguars will keep it close throughout, but this game is where we see rookie QB Blaine Gabbert's youth and inexperience exploited. Expect the Texans to stack the box and have a nickel/dime back spy RB Maurice Jones-Drew.

Thus, Houston will force Gabbert to beat them and he's simply not there yet in terms of maturity. Playing tough defenses each week is beginning to takes its toll and the Texans get a big divisional win.

Texans 19, Jaguars 9

Cincinnati Bengals (at Seattle)

Let's put it this way, if the Seahawks could only manage one FG against a Cleveland Browns defense who's although improved, nowhere near as solid as Cincinnati's, what are the odds Seattle does any better against the Bengals?

None. Cincy ranks No. 5 against both the pass and rush, whereas Seattle ranks No. 28 and No. 31 in passing and rushing offense, respectively.

Despite the game being played in The Great Northwest means nothing, because Seattle has yet to string together a full 60 minute performance on both sides of the ball in any game this season.

As for the Bengals, their defense is good enough to win them games because their offense can manage the clock very well. It's not a blowout, but Cincy's defense controls the tempo throughout.

Bengals 20, Seahawks 6
