Terrell Owens Workout Gives NFL Contenders No Reason To Sign Him

Michael DixonOct 26, 2011

Terrell Owens held a workout on Tuesday. It was an open workout for anyone affiliated with an NFL team, but nobody showed up.

Actually, that's not too big of a deal. This is the information age. With ESPN2 and the NFL Network broadcasting the workout, there was no real need for anyone to fly out to California.

But whether people were watching on television or in person, did Owens give any reason for NFL teams to call him?

Well, he didn't embarrass himself. Owens will be 38 years old in December, but is obviously still in tremendous physical shape.

But there are a few things Owens didn't do.

He didn't run a 40-yard dash. That's a little worrisome. The 40 is a pretty important statistic for a receiver. So, when one is coming off an injury and doesn't run it at a workout, it's an alarming sign.

More importantly, he didn't do anything that was especially impressive. To be fair, I don't know what you could do in a workout that would really wow anyone. We know that Owens can run routes and catch passes, but how can he do those things with NFL defenders bumping him? There's really no way that a workout like the one we saw on Tuesday will answer that question.

Now, if I were running a team that needed a receiver to put me over the edge, I would at least entertain the idea of signing Owens. But what happened today was just not an obvious sign that he's still capable of being a significant contributor.

Now, 72 catches, 983 yards and nine touchdowns is a nice total for a season. That's what Owens had last year and there isn't a single team that wouldn't love to have that.

But since last year, Owens has dealt with an injury. Also, if someone signs him right now and he plays on Sunday, he will be going against guys that have been playing NFL games for the last seven weeks.

It's something to be aware of. I am not saying that Owens shouldn't be signed by anyone, but he showed himself as nothing more than a good desperation option today.

We didn't really need the workout to know that.
