Chicago Bears: Five Ways This Team Can Win with Mike Martz

Bryan DietzlerOct 26, 2011

Over the Bear’s past two games, we have seen a bit of a resurgence in their offense. Not only do they look more improved but they also look as if they are finally starting to get Martz’s offense. They are protecting quarterback Jay Cutler much better than they have through the first few games and are running the ball with authority.

With nine games left in the season, is it possible that the Bears could win more games with this offense and get back into the playoffs? And just how would they be able to win with Martz as their offensive coordinator?

Let’s look at five ways that the Bears can get back to the playoffs with Martz as their offensive coordinator.

An Ever Evolving Passing Game

1 of 5

We have seen the Bears passing game go from one of the worst in the NFL in the first three games (mostly in their three losses) to one of the better and more controlled attacks over the last two games.

This doesn’t mean that the Bears are out of the woods by any means on their passing game, but things have gotten better and some of the root causes of this are mentioned later on in this slideshow.

As long as the Bears receivers can catch the ball and Cutler can get it out to his receivers, they will see success.

Pass Protection Is Getting Better

2 of 5

If you have seen the last couple of games, you will have noticed that Cutler is finding a lot of time to throw the ball. The Bears have made some adjustments in their pass blocking schemes to afford Cutler more time to throw.

Whether it’s utilizing the tight ends or keeping the running backs into block, the Bears have seen some good success blocking lately, and if it can continue, good things are going to happen in Chicago. And Cutler will stay healthy as well.

The Run Blocking Is Super!

3 of 5

Have you seen the Bears run blocking lately? They have had some of the best blocking in the NFL and they are getting a lot of yards on the ground this year.

Without this blocking effort, running back Matt Forte wouldn’t have nearly as many yards on the ground as he has right now. This run blocking unit is one of the best, and it’s been Martz’ wisdom that has gotten it to where it's at.

Route Running

4 of 5

The Bears receivers are running better routes now, and even though it might have taken them a while to learn the complicated route tree of the Martz offense, now that they have learned it they are catching the ball much better.

They are also doing much more with it after the catch. We are starting to see Roy Williams become effective in this offense (as long as he can catch the ball), and that’s going to help the Bears move the ball down the field much better than they  have been able to do in the first few games.

Ability to Adjust to the Game

5 of 5

Martz has had some problems in the past adjusting to the game when his offense isn’t working. Last year, we saw him trying to throw the ball much more only to discover that wasn’t going to work. After their bye week, the Bears went to a better mix of the running and passing game and that seemed to go well for them and got them into the playoffs.

It appears as if that same thing is starting to happen again this season. Chicago has realized that it needs to run the ball much more to be effective and use the passing game to move the ball in third and long situations or when the see an opportunity develop to use it.

Playing it like this will certainly bring the Bears better success the rest of the season.
