Week 8 Waiver Wire: Kansas City Chiefs and More Surprising Defenses to Sign

Michael DixonOct 25, 2011

By now, we probably have a pretty good sense for what we can expect from most teams. This week taught us that upsets are quite possible, but the teams still played pretty much the game that we expected.

Look at the Jaguars. They upset the Ravens, but didn't go out and score 40 points to do it. If you had the Ravens defense, you still had a fine day.

So, now that it's pretty clear what kind of game we're going to get from most teams, let's take a look at some fantasy defenses worth picking up.

Kansas City Chiefs

Given the immense talent that they have, the Chargers offense is just looking terrible. It's amazing to say this given their pathetic start, but the Chiefs aren't far from contention in the AFC West. A win over the Chargers on Sunday makes them real contenders.

In their first loss to the Chargers this season, the Chiefs sacked Philip Rivers twice, intercepted two passes, and allowed a respectable 20 points.

Rivers has thrown two interceptions in four games this season, including the earlier game against the Chiefs. That game was in San Diego, this one is in Kansas City. The Kansas City defense is a good play here.

New York Giants

Given their endless list of injuries, the Giants defense wouldn't appear to be a great play this season. But when you are going against the Dolphins, you are a good play.

The Dolphins have just been terrible this year. Their record speaks for itself, and they haven't done anything of note offensively since their Week 1 loss to the Patriots.

You can almost rely on streaming defenses to go with whatever team is playing them.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have actually been a good team this season. The Seahawks offense is far from a strong unit, which we saw on Sunday against the Browns.

This is another matchup that just sets up well for the Bengals. I don't anticipate a lot of points from this game. I also expect the turnovers and sacks to be there.

Regardless of which quarterback plays for the Seahawks, their offense needs to prove that opposing defenses aren't good plays. Even in their higher scoring efforts, Seattle has just not done that.
