BCS Rankings: Why Oklahoma State and Kansas State Have Peaked in the BCS
I hope you are relishing the moment, Oklahoma State and Kansas State fans.
Your teams have peaked in 2011.
I’ll start with the team the BCS computers currently have at No. 3: the Cowboys. This is only the second time they’ve ever been ranked this high in school history.
They are the beneficiary of a No. 9 Oklahoma loss and the ridiculous Hail Mary loss of No. 15 Wisconsin.
The dirty little secret about the Cowboys has yet to be revealed: their defense stinks.
The unit is currently ranked 65th in the nation, allowing just under 27 points a game. They have given up at least 24 points to every opponent but one through seven games. They are shoddy tacklers and lack much depth in the front seven.
With Baylor, No. 8 Kansas State, No. 20 Texas Tech and OU still on the slate—this defense is about to get torn to shreds.
Senior QB Brandon Weeden may be one of the most efficient passer in the nation right now, and wide receiver Justin Blackmon may be the best pro prospect at the position, but none of that matters if you can’t stop anyone.
The Cowboys are going to have 2-3 losses before this season is finished.
As will fellow Big 12 school, No. 8 Kansas State.
They have the opposite problem of OSU; they have virtually no passing attack. Their 140.9 passing yards per game is 110th in the nation. That means they have one of the top-10 worst passing offenses in college football.
QB Collin Klein prefers to tuck the ball and run, making the offense far too one-dimensional for the teams they still have to face.
The real reason KSU is going to slide down the BCS rankings like they’re at the McDonald’s play-place is there next four games.
First up, it’s the Sunflower Showdown against a very angry Oklahoma team. Then it’s on the road at Oklahoma State, a home game against No. 16 Texas A&M followed by a road game at No. 24 Texas.
Woah!
The Big 12 is quietly just as good as the SEC this season and there is no way Oklahoma State or Kansas State go undefeated.
Enjoy the lofty rankings while it lasts before it vanishes into thin air.
