BCS Rankings: Oklahoma Sooners Still Have Shot at BCS Glory

Gabe ZaldivarOct 24, 2011

Disaster struck on Saturday when the Oklahoma Sooners lost to Texas Tech. By Sunday night, we found out that the worst had indeed been averted as Oklahoma still has a chance to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

The BCS looked favorably on Oklahoma as they kept the former No. 3 team in the nation in the top 10. They still have a hold on their fate as they have the schedule and talent to skirt what seemed to be a season ending loss.

You can save the sob stories for now, because things could have been a lot worse as Texas Tech did everything in their power to corral Landry Jones on Saturday.

In the end, they did just enough to avert a late come from behind effort. The Red Raiders posted a renewed offensive prowess that allowed them to pull off the upset of the week.

Now Oklahoma is left to regroup and look ahead to the possibilities that will see them back in the good graces of the BCS.

There are a couple of obvious notes to consider right off the bat. Either one of the top two teams is guaranteed a loss going into the clash of titans that is Alabama against LSU.

You also have to think that Boise State is forever destined to be one rung away from the two spots as the computers continue to find fault in their strength of schedule.

What really has me confident of a late surge is the remaining games to be played by Oklahoma. Commanding wins over Kansas State and Texas A&M should have the Sooners knocking on the top-5's door.

Besides the Oregon game, Stanford has a fairly benign schedule that could see them getting the shaft like Boise State will. If they falter against the Ducks, and Clemson stumbles along the way, there is just one hurdle to leap.

It looks like a BCS title bid will come down to the showdown with Oklahoma State. If the Sooners rebound the way I think they can, they will be playing for one of the top-two spots at the end of the season.

At the very least, they will be back in the discussion with a win over a Cowboys program that should still be at the top of the heap.

The Sooners have made their road to a title extremely difficult, but there is still a road. Their chances at clinching the ultimate prize are far from extinguished. They will just have to earn it all over again.
