Is Patrick Cote Living in a Dream World?
Patrick "The Predator" Cote just came off a disappointing loss at UFC 90 to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
Cote was the first man in the UFC to make it to the third round against Silva. Unfortunately, Cote injured his leg in the third and the fight was stopped.
Truth is, Anderson Silva didn't finish Patrick Cote that night, but still dominated him for three rounds. Cote didn't, at any point in the fight, pose a threat to Silva and I didn't see anything from Cote that made me believe he could beat Silva in the future.
Cote had surgery for his torn MCL and meniscus on Dec. 8 and in an interview he said he would probably be out of action for six months. He also said that when he returns, he would love to fight Silva again and said that the next time he would beat him.
Ok...for the people who haven't read this well, Cote said he would beat Silva in a rematch.
With all due respect to Cote, Silva dominated him and didn't even look impressive. So I'm thinking that Cote is either living in a dream, where he believes he can beat Silva or the guy is just....well dumb and I hate to say that he might be, because we Canadians...are far from dumb.
When Cote returns, he will probably have to make his way back up the ladder of contention, something he didn't have to do in the first fight (he just replaced Yushin Okami). Can Cote beat Okami, Nathan Marquardt, or Demian Maia to get another title shot? I doubt so.
Cote is a tough kid and a good fighter at best, but for him to say that he will beat Silva when he returns is a little bit exaggerated, especially considering that he didn't come close, not even an inch to beating Silva in the first fight.
I wish him good luck in his rehabilitation and can't wait to see him in the octagon again, but Cote should concentrate on his return and on other opponents before saying he'll beat Silva.
