Fantasy Football Week 8: Roy Helu and 5 Waiver Players Worth Watching

Gabe ZaldivarOct 24, 2011

This past Sunday gave us a few awkward moments as fantasy stars went down in pain. That is the moment fantasy owners go back to the drawing board that is your league's waiver wire.

We have the cure for what is ailing you. And if you saw what happened to Tim Hightower, a torn ACL is exactly what is weighing heavily on your mind at the moment.

Here are five dudes that you can have for free in most Yahoo Leagues. Don't sulk as the injuries pile up, and for god's sake, don't hit the panic button.

Roy Helu and several other bargain-basement fantasy players are out there. They just need a loving home to take a chance on them.

1. Roy Helu: Tim Hightower is done for the season. That means those who were hoping for a resurgence from the Redskins running back are left to instead drop him altogether.

Washington was playing with a ground game by committee anyway. Now they have one less committee member mucking up the numbers. Ryan Torain is owned by more than half of the leagues out there, but Helu is only owned in 15%.

I happen to like the upside of Helu a lot more. The young burner will be getting a lot of touches for the rest of the season.

2. DeMarco Murray: Most leagues are catching onto one of the mot surprising players in Week 7.

With Felix Jones sidelined, DeMarco Murray flourished.

This guy is heating up as owners nab him from the bargain bin. Granted, Jones will be back shortly. If he does play though, Murray is primed to steal a great deal of touches from the presumed starter. There is no way the Cowboys put that much production on the bench.

3. Jabar Gaffney: Santana Moss will be out for over a month. Leaving the Redskins to find a new receiver to pick up the slack and touches Moss warranted.

My money is on Gaffney getting a great deal of the targets as soon as this week against Buffalo. The other name you should look at is Anthony Armstrong, but he has hamstring issues you should be wary of.

4. Michael Bush: Monitor this situation this week. You want to stay ahead of the game to win some pivotal fantasy matchups going forward. The Raiders have a bye this week, but Darren McFadden is hobbled.

If McFadden looks primed to miss any amount of time, Bush will be a blessing as a fantasy pickup. He has the ability to break 100 yards on every game, he just needs the touches.

5. Visanthe Shiancoe: Here is a blast from the past. Shiancoe is finally back in the mix. The star tight end was targeted a great deal more in Christian Ponder's first start of the season.

You can bet the young QB will look to him a great deal more as he settles in as the teams starting QB.
