Cam Newton: NFL Fans Shouldn't Be Surprised by Success of Carolina Panthers QB

Jacqueline KirbyOct 24, 2011

Cam Newton has been breaking records ever since the season started, yet for some reason he had doubters.  While Newton and the Carolina Panthers are only 2-5, they have been in every game they played.

Newton started the season throwing over 400 yards in the first few games, something that is just unheard of, especially for a rookie.  He may be the 25th-rated passer in the league but he is fourth in passing yards, behind greats like Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers

But fans shouldn't be surprised by how easily he has adjusted to life in the big leagues.  After leaving the University of Florida as Tim Tebow's backup, Cam went to Blinn College in Texas where he led them to the NJCAA National Championship.

Of course we all know the rest: He went on to Auburn to lead them to the national championship last year and was the No. 1 draft pick of 2011.  So logically, it makes sense that he would be amazing coming out of the gate.

Although it typically never happens in the NFL, Cam has made it happen.  Some may say that he has more athletic ability than any other quarterback in the league, and it would be a hard case to argue.

League analyst Steve Maruicci said, "With any rookie quarterback, you're going to see ups and downs.  But his ups have been more impressive than anyone could have hoped for."

It's a combination of his strong arm, willingness to learn and competitiveness that make him such a beast on the field.  He has command of the huddle and his teammates have credited him with being the hardest-working guy out on the field.

Before the game against the New Orleans Saints, a New Orleans reporter asked Newton if he was impressed with his transition to the NFL.  Cam's response? "If you write a good article, do you surprise yourself?"

He has a valid point—if you are great at something, why be shocked by it?  Which is exactly why the fans shouldn't be surprised at his success.  Cam Newton is already a household name, but he is on his way to becoming a legend one game at a time.

May as well get on the Cam-wagon now.
