Andre Johnson Injury: Updates on Texans Star's Week 8 Status and Fantasy Value

Eric BowmanOct 24, 2011

The Houston Texans' best wide receiver missed another game this past Sunday, but there is hope he will finally return.

Andre Johnson has been out with a serious hamstring injury for weeks now, but the Texans were finally able to win without him. They beat their division rival, the Tennessee Titans, 41-7 on the road.

It was a big win for the Texans, and they will keep wishing Johnson to full health. He's one of the best receivers in the league, and without him they are far from an elite team.

He then tweeted that Johnson will miss the game.

Andre Johnson is willing to play it smart with his hamstring injury, according to Houston Chronicle's Jeffrey Martin.

"

"Johnson still feels a tug in his leg when he opens up his stride while running, and that's the main issue. He expects a decision to be made today or Saturday, and according to Kubiak, it likely will be left to Johnson.

'I'm not going to go out there and play unless I feel comfortable,' Johnson said. 'If I don't feel like I can play, I'm not going to go out there. I definitely won't do anything to put myself in any danger.'"

Update: Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. EDT --Eric Ball

Johnson, may have been able to fully participate in practice, but that doesn't mean he's a lock to suit up on Sunday:

It sounds like it's going to come down to pain tolerance for the All Pro. Does he want to gut it out and play at less than 100-percent against the lowly Jaguars?

We aren't going to have that final answer until right before the opening coin flip.

Update: Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. EDT -- Tim Daniels

Nick Scurfield, who covers the Texans for the team website, tweeted more positive news about Johnson. Things continue to trend in the right direction for the star receiver.

Making it through an entire Wednesday practice is the best news Johnson could have hoped for. It will be interesting to see how he feels tomorrow. Keep checking back for updates.

Update: Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. EDT -- Tim Daniels

Tania Ganguli, who covers the Jaguars for the Florida Times-Union, tweeted a quote from Texans head coach Gary Kubiak about Johnson's availability for this week's game between the two teams.

That's great news for Johnson's fantasy owners, but his status is far from certain. We'll see how he reacts to practice today. If there's no setbacks, he should be good to go on Sunday.

Update: Monday, Oct. 24 at 2:25 p.m. ET

Early in the week there isn't a lot of news related to Johnson. The Texans are happy they finally won without him, but they would still love to have him out there. Head coach Gary Kubiak had positive words about Johnson's status on Friday. Per Pro Football Talk:

"Obviously, Andre is not where he needs to be right now, but he’s doing well; doing very well,” Kubiak said. “He was catching balls today from [quarterback] T.J. [Yates] and running routes. It’s very impressive where he’s at right now, but there’s still a little ‘nother step for him to take before we’re comfortable. So, hopefully he’ll take it here sometime soon.”

This is definitely good news, although, it still doesn't sound like Johnson will play this week. It's great that he is making progress, but the Texans know they cannot afford to rush Johnson.

Houston would be smart to wait until Johnson is at 100 percent before they let him step back on the field. After the Texans big win over the Titans, I highly doubt Johnson will play on Sunday. After all, Houston shouldn't really need Johnson to beat the Jaguars this Sunday.

If he's on your fantasy team, then he'll likely be on your bench for another week. This isn't a bad thing though because if he were to rush his return and re-injure himself it would only make matters worse.
