Week 8 Waiver Wire: Kevin Kolb and 4 Players You Should Avoid
In a season that has seen quite a number of stars disappoint, the waiver wire has become even more important in fantasy football this year.
As the season begins to head into the back stretch, you're undoubtedly looking for someone to come in and fix your early season woes.
Don't look in these players' directions to be your team's savior. These players should be avoided despite the temptation to add them.
Maurice Morris
1 of 4Team/Position: Detroit Lions/RB
ESPN Owned: 11.8 percent (+11.5 percent)
With Jahvid Best out with a concussion, Morris saw his value shoot up as he was named the starter for a Week 7 matchup against the Falcons. This is a Falcons team that had given up at least 95 yards on the ground in five of their six games.
Unfortunately, Morris bombed in his starting-role audition. The final line looks decent (for a Lions RB, at least) with nine carries for 50 yards. But if you take away a 31-yard rush in the fourth quarter, that leaves Morris with eight carries for 19 yards.
That's terrible given the matchup, and it did not help that Keiland Williams gained 44 yards on nine carries as well.
Kevin Walter
2 of 4Team/Position: Houston Texans/WR
ESPN Owned: 36.2 percent (+32.1 percent)
Walter has become the quick fill-in for anyone plagued by the Andre Johnson injury. Unfortunately, Walter hasn't been able to keep any momentum going. He had a breakout game against Oakland and followed that up with dud performances against Baltimore and Tennessee.
I'll give him a pass for the Ravens game, as they are the best defense in the league. But his performance against the Titans left owners feeling like they should've gotten more out of Walter. Maybe it was the illness that was plaguing him, or maybe Cortland Finnegan shut down his side of the field?
I'm not sure which it was, but Walter's value has not only diminished in the past two weeks due to his performance, but Mr. Foster has finally returned to offensive prominence.
Kevin Kolb
3 of 4Team/Position: Arizona Cardinals/QB
ESPN Owned: 58.2 percent (-9.9 percent)
Kolb is a defense's best friend these days.
He has 13 turnovers compared to seven passing TDs this year. And the Cardinals get Ray Lewis and friends next week. Uh oh!
Yes, he did put up good numbers against the Steelers, but I'm willing to call this a one-game fluke. Looking at his previous games, Kolb has always managed to put up good yardage, but his ability to score seems to come and go every week.
With Beanie Wells likely out, the rushing game is likely to take a step backwards—which means that Kolb will be padding some defender's stats instead of his own.
Montario Hardesty
4 of 4Team/Position: Cleveland Browns/RB
ESPN Owned: 54.4 percent (+39 percent)
It's a trap! If Admiral Ackbar were here to guide you for your fantasy team, that would be his advice for Hardesty.
Yes, he had 95 yards rushing—but on 33 carries (yes, you read that right).
Maybe it was the matchup, as the Seahawks have been pretty stout against the run—but Hardesty's future doesn't look too bright for Week 8 either.
The 49ers have the league's second best rushing defense and perhaps the most hazardous defense for a RB.
Of their first six games, only three opposing RBs made it to the end unscathed.
