2012 NFL Draft: Reviewing Matt Barkley's Performance vs. Notre Dame

Jon DoveOct 24, 2011

The talk of the 2012 NFL draft is Stanford's Andrew Luck. However, this draft class could see as many four quarterback selected in the 1st round. One of the quarterbacks looking to land in the 1st round is USC's Matt Barkley.

Barkley was a very highly rated recruit, who has started every game of his college career. He has not allowed the pressure impact his play on the field. Barkley displays a lot of poise and leadership. His ability to lead his team is one of his best qualities.

As far as the NFL draft is concerned, Barkley is locked in a heated battle with Oklahoma's Landry Jones to be the second quarterback selected. Jones has the edge with physical abilities, but Barkley has a better feel for the position. Barkley's feel for the position is due to his experience and games played.

Barkley recently played a terrific game versus Notre Dame, where he led his team to an impressive victory. His performance helped his draft stock, as attempts to make a push for the top 10.

The most impressive part of his performance was his ability to deliver an accurate football. He was throwing his targets open, allowing them to gain yards after the catch. His best throw of the night came on a quick slant, where he perfectly placed the ball.

Barkley moved the offense with great efficiency. He was highly effective in the redzone, connecting on three redzone touchdowns. His ability to quickly release the ball, allowed USC to run several successful wide receiver screens. The wide receiver screen was a major part of the USC game plan.

The Notre Dame defense did a good job creating pressure. Barkley was forced from the pocket on several occasions. However, Barkley did a good job evading the rush and extending he play. He isn't a great athlete but has enough savvy to avoid taking a sack.

USC's offensive system is something that will help Barkley's transition to the NFL. They run a lot of pro style concepts, especially playaction. Barkley does a great job with the play fake, while also quickly getting his head around.

While Barkley played a good game, I still saw some problem areas. Barkley doesn't possess a great throwing arm. He struggle to push the ball towards the sideline, floating a handful of passes. At times, he did show good zip, spinning a really clean football. His best throws were in the middle of the field.

I would have liked to see Barkley attack the deep part of the field. He only attempted a few passes deeper than 25 yards. The NFL game heavily depends on a quarterbacks ability to push the ball deep down the field.

Barkley needs to continue to play well if he hopes to land in the top 10 of the 2012 draft. However, his performance versus Notre Dame definitely helped his stock.
