Colts vs. Saints: New Orleans Is Super Bowl-Bound with or Without Sean Payton

Donald WoodOct 24, 2011

The New Orleans Saints are one of the best teams in the NFL, and no matter where their head coach Sean Payton is sitting, they will be serious Super Bowl contenders.

After suffering a torn MCL and a broken leg, Payton has been relegated to the booth upstairs where he will view the games until the doctors deem him fit enough to handle being on the sidelines.

Payton is very important to this team, but the 62-7 beatdown of the Indianapolis Colts shows that the real leader of that team is under center.

As long as the New Orleans Saints have Drew Brees as their quarterback, they have a serious chance at making it all the way to the Super Bowl.

The problem remains their defense, though.

While beating up on a terrible Colts team may be good for the stat books, it doesn’t help the defense zone in on their weaknesses and address them like they need to be the top contender in the NFC.

It’s obvious that with the emergence of young tight end Jimmy Graham, the return of Marques Colston and the improved run game with Mark Ingram, Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles that the Saints have the offense to go to the Super Bowl, but the defense leaves major question marks.

While Sean Payton is relaxing in the booth upstairs, maybe he can start scheming with the defensive coordinators for ways to improve so there will be a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl this season.

The Saints won't beat the Green Bay Packers without a better defense.
