NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are Playing for Andrew Luck Lottery?

Ryan PhillipsOct 24, 2011

We all know that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is going to be the No. 1 pick of the 2012 NFL draft. The only thing yet to be determined is which team will end up being able to take him. There are three winless teams in the league right now, but it appears to be a two-horse race for Luck.

The Indianapolis Colts were embarrassed by the New Orleans Saints, 62-7, on Sunday Night Football. They looked absolutely horrendous as they dropped to 0-7, and again showed that their woes extend far beyond just the quarterback position. Without Peyton Manning under center, Indianapolis is clearly one of the worst teams in the league and the roster is in need of a major overhaul.

If the Colts do end up with the top pick in April's draft, I don't believe they will take Luck. I think management will essentially hold an auction for the right to select the Stanford signal-caller and bring back a king's ransom in return and hand the franchise back to Manning.

The team's four-time MVP likely has at least three good years left and Luck's rookie contract would last for a maximum of five seasons. Most experts feel the young quarterback is ready to step on the field and contribute immediately, so it would be a waste for him to sit on the sidelines. Though the Colts may end up in a position to select Luck, I don't think he'll ever end up playing for them.

The Miami Dolphins did it again. They found another way to lose. The Dolphins jumped to a 15-0 lead over the Denver Broncos on Sunday but managed to turn Tim Tebow's homecoming into a coronation, as they allowed the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner to lead Denver back to an 18-15 win.

Right now, the Dolphins are the worst team in the NFL, even surpassing the Colts. They are 0-6 and look to have no hope for any sort of turnaround. Head coach Tony Sparano is likely on his last legs, the defense has been consistently gashed (allowing 377 yards per game) and the offense is anemic (averaging 331 yards per game).

The Dolphins have to be the favorite to land Luck, since they are in desperate need of a new direction to the franchise and their quarterback situation is hopelessly muddled. Even if Miami somehow doesn't end up with the worst record and therefore the top pick in the upcoming draft, I think they'll make a move to land Luck.
