WWE Vengeance 2011: Mark Henry's Face Turn Bad Move for SmackDown

Adam WellsOct 24, 2011

Of all the matches on the WWE Vengeance card, the one that had the lowest expectations was Mark Henry vs. Big Show for the world title. But just when you think that you know it all, these two have the show-stealing match that saved the pay-per-view from mediocrity.

In case you missed it, Henry superplexed Big Show off the top rope and the ring exploded. It was the same spot that WWE used back in 2003 in a match between Brock Lesnar and Big Show.

Don’t let the finish fool you, though. These two giants had a really good match. It wasn’t "Match of the Year" quality or anything like that, but considering how low the expectations were leading up to it, this was the biggest surprise of the show.

The only thing that was perplexing was after the ring explosion, when Henry and Show were making their way to the back.

Show wound up walking to the back on his own power after a failed attempt to fit him onto a stretcher. That part was fine, but it was Henry’s retreat that was confusing.

Henry has been built up as the monster heel that no one wants to face in a ring. On this night, though, he basically made a face turn. He refused to be helped to the back by the medical staff and wound up crawling on his hands and knees.

If WWE is going to turn Henry face, that would be fine. But considering the fact that there are no main event heels on SmackDown, and he has been thriving in the role for the better part of three months, it would make no sense to turn him now.

Henry has really stepped up his game since being repackaged as this monster and, judging by the improving ratings on SmackDown, the fans have become quite taken with this new role.

We all assumed that a Henry championship run would be a disaster of epic proportions, but he proved once again last night that he is the best act going in WWE right now.

Perhaps WWE will get Henry back to being the monster that he has been tonight on Raw, but last night it appeared as if he was being turned into a fan favorite.
