Rams Update: Jason Smith Head Injury Is Not Serious

David HeebOct 23, 2011

According to NFL.com, the head injury suffered by Jason Smith was not serious.  He flew home with the rest of the Rams' team following their embarrassing 34-7 loss at Dallas on Sunday.  Smith might have a strained neck or a concussion, but that would be good news compared to how serious the injury appeared to be at the time.

While trying to help on a fumble recovery, Smith went head first into the leg of a Cowboys' player, and it was the kind of injury that looked like it could be very dangerous.  Thankfully, Smith is not going to suffer any long term or career threatening injury.

Smith was the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of Baylor University.  When he was drafted, the Rams thought they were selecting a franchise left tackle, the type of player that could anchor their offensive line for the next decade.

Instead, Smith has been a huge disappointment and never even played left tackle.  The Rams moved Smith to right tackle, and while he has proven to be a tough run blocker, he has struggled in pass protection.  Overall, the entire Rams' offensive line has been very disappointing so far this season.  Rams' QB Sam Bradford is the most hit, sacked, and knocked down QB in the NFL.

Bradford did not play Sunday at Dallas because of a high ankle sprain.  In Bradford's absence, backup QB A.J. Feeley struggled. The Rams' defense also played terrible. They allowed rookie running back Demarco Murray to rush for 252 yards.

So the bad news for Rams' fans is that their team is 0-6, and probably the worst team in the NFL.

The good news for the Rams is they won't lose Jason Smith for too long. That's certainly something to be thankful for.  As disappointing as the Rams' season has been, a players' health is always more important.
