LSU and Alabama: Should They Be Permitted to Play in BCS Championship?

Aaron McKinneyOct 23, 2011

Remember a few years back when Ohio State and Michigan played an epic game that was a defacto Big Ten Championship on the last weekend of the season?

So many people argued that they should be able to play against one another in the BCS Championship. We may be see a similar scenario play out in the SEC this year.

Now, everybody south of the Mason-Dixon line will be clamoring for this if LSU and Alabama have a close and epic game in two weeks and both stay undefeated otherwise. This definitely shouldn't happen. It wasn't allowed to happen for the Big Ten and shouldn't be now for the SEC.

I realize the SEC is far more powerful than any other conference and I do believe the two most complete defenses in the nation reside in Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge. But should we take possible undefeated teams from the PAC-12, Big 12 and ACC out of the equation?

Without a doubt, the undefeated teams from those conferences would raise cane and they absolutely should.

I happen to think that there may only be one or two undefeated teams left. I'm not even sure if the winner of the SEC West can come out and win the championship after being bludgeoned by the rest of the SEC. Honestly, there's a really solid chance the only team that could be left standing is Boise State.

Don't kid your self there either. If you think for one second the Broncos can just said through the MWC, remember this, every team in that conference will practically have their players putting their lives on the line to win.

Back to the matter at hand. Two teams from any conference should not be able to play each other in the championship. First of all, the precedent was set with that OSU-UM game. Second, teams that run the gauntlet and get out of their conferences unblemished should be given the first opportunity.

Boise State already has teams jumping them in the standings and there's a chance that one-loss teams from power conferences will too. Lastly, college football is a national sport, it's not just located in the South and Texas. Lets keep the national interest across the country.

Honestly, I'm becoming very skeptical that there will be more than one undefeated team with that one being Boise State. Oklahoma State still has to get through Oklahoma and Kansas State. Kansas State has Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas A&M. Stanford has Oregon and a championship game. Clemson has Georgia Tech and a championship game. Alabama has LSU and a championship game. LSU has Alabama and a championship.

That's a lot to worry about.

Also, with the possibility these teams could all lose, that allows teams like Oregon, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Nebraska and South Carolina to sneak back in. Wasn't the BCS created to avoid something like having two teams from one conference?

I'm just saying it shouldn't be allowed to happen. We're getting just what everybody wants and this is how it should be.
