BCS Rankings 2011: Why OU, Wisconsin Losses Mean an SEC vs SEC Championship Game

Dan VastaOct 23, 2011

The college football season is finally starting to come into the stretch. The BCS Rankings are out, and two of the top heayweights have been bounced almost out of contention.

Both the Sooners and the Badgers suffered miserable, nail-biting losses that will likely knock them out of the BCS National Championship for good. Even if they run the table, they wll not have much of a shot.

So, it begs the question as to whether or not two SEC teams can make the BCS National Championship.

Though it has never happened, the BCS has never let us down as far as giving us the best two teams every single season since the year it started back in 1998.

I would like to think LSU and Alabama are the easy choices for the best two teams at the moment. There are a few reasons and chances as to why The Game of the Century is not only a national play-in but also a preview of the BCS National Championship.

If the game really is epic and has a photo finish after which you leave not really knowing who the better team was, (say the game goes to overtime or is won on a last-second kick) why not let them fight it out a month later?

Ohio State and Michigan were the last two teams to play each other when ranked No. 1 and No. 2, but those teams never played each other for it all. There is a reason why.

It is called the domination of the SEC!

The winner of the SEC may always play for all the marbles, and this season makes for a great debate on whether or not the runner-up should get their rematch. If LSU loses, they would need to knock off an explosive Arkansas team in the regular season finale.

If Alabama loses, they would need to win at Mississippi State and at Auburn. Safe to say these two teams have a lot of work cut out for them.

However, if the winner of the game goes 13-0 and the loser dominates and finishes 11-1, why not let them square off once again?

The BCS National Championship will be played in Louisiana, which would light up and electrify the atmosphere even more. Obviously, it depends on which other teams win all their remaining games.

If Clemson, Stanford or Oklahoma State run the table the point may be moot, but what happens if the only undefeated teams are Houston, Boise State and LSU/Alabama?

I would almost bank on two SEC teams playing for it all since I could not imagine the BCS taking a one-loss non-SEC team over a one-loss SEC team.

The only problem is that that's a big if!

That is the keyword, since there are a ton of games left to be played and last night just proved that anything can happen. If the upsets continue and the pageantry remains in college football, we may be looking at a first BCS National Championship between two teams from the same conference.
