Christian Ponder Video: Watch Vikings' Rookie QB Start Career with 73-Yard Bang

Wes ODonnellOct 23, 2011

It took Donovan McNabb six weeks to lose his starting job with the Minnesota Vikings.

It took rookie Christian Ponder two plays to score his first career NFL touchdown.

Clearly, the Vikings needed a fresh face under center.

The Vikes have had trouble scoring points and winning football games this year, but they're off to a solid start in the Christian Ponder era.

Ponder's first career pass went 73 yards down to the 1-yard line after a review overturned the initial ruling of a touchdown pass.

The Vikings then went to their workhorse, Adrian Peterson, from the 1-yard line, but he found no running room.

It was probably better off. Ponder found his tight end Visanthe Shiancoe on the second down and deservedly got his first career touchdown.

The Vikings, in three plays, quickly stunned the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the Metrodome.

They'll need a lot more of this from Ponder, though.

Aaron Rodgers wasted no time getting the Packers right back in the game and the Vikings defense is in for a long day.

It is one thing to open your career in the NFL against the defending champs. It is another to have to do it against the six-week MVP of the NFL and reigning Super Bowl MVP, Aaron Rodgers.

Ponder has a bright future in the NFL and we can see that the Vikings have a lot to look forward to.

It won't happen overnight, but Ponder will flash this year and when they get another dependable weapon on the outside, he'll become a legitimate threat in the NFL.
