Tim Tebow and the Broncos Proof That Only 1 Quarter Truly Matters

Eric BallOct 23, 2011

Timmy terrific is at it again.

After three quarters of setting back the quarterback position 15 years, Tim Tebow led a 15-point comeback with no timeouts and only about six minutes of game action to eventually beat the Miami Dolphins 18-15 in overtime.

After going 4-of-14 with 46 passing yards on his first 11 drives, he went 9-of-13 for 121 yards and two TDs for the remainder of the game. It was an inconceivable turn of events and further proof that this kid is something special.

It was further proof that Tebow may not be the prettiest passer, but he finds a way to rally his troops and keep the Broncos in every game.

Sure, he was the beneficiary of a huge on-sides kick that set them up with a short field, and of the defense for getting the big turnover in overtime, but there were multiple plays that reminded you why he can be so extraordinary.

Tebow finished the game going 13-of-27 for 161 yards, two touchdowns and 65 rushing yards, including a dazzling 21-yard effort, where he broke three tackles.

He made an incredible throw to Daniel Fells for 28-yards that thread the needle beautifully and set up the game-tying touchdown.

It appears as if Tebow prefers to throw the ball on the run, and that, combined with his ability to rip off enormous runs, is big trouble for opposing defenses. In the first half he didn’t seem comfortable in the pocket, and only once he was able to free style plays did he really come alive.

Head coach John Fox might want to consider a less rigged offense early in games to cater to Tebow’s abilities. In the hurry-up offense he continues to show great poise and leadership, Last week he almost erased a 26-10 fourth quarter against the Chargers once he had that extreme sense of urgency. Last year he orchestrated a 13-point fourth quarter comeback against the Texans.

The fourth quarter heroics are becoming the norm for Tebow and the Broncos, and this week his O-Line did him no favors.

While his defense and special teams helped pickup the slack, his O-Line did him no favor. Miami had a grand total of eight sacks on the season heading into Week 7; they had seven on Tebow Sunday. Add nine QB hits and Tebow was running for his life more often than not.

He also threw some cringe-worthy passes in the first half—one that easily could have been a pick-six. Yet this is really the only stat that matters: Tim Tebow is 1-0 as a starter in 2011.

Like the kid that waits till the night before to study for his test and crams all night, Tebow still finds a way to get a decent grade.
