Redskins vs. Panthers: 5 Second Half Adjustments Washington Must Make

Dan SteckenbergOct 23, 2011

The 3-2 Redskins started out the year as the surprise leaders of the NFC East, but they've slowed down since their hot start, and the first half was John Beck's audition to be Washington's starting QB for the rest of the season.

Beck has been capable, but ideally the Redskins would like to see even more against a Panthers team that—aside from Cam Newton and Steve Smith—has very few elite players on its roster.

These five second-half adjustments will help the 'Skins prevail.

1. Make It Easier for John Beck

Today is Beck's first start in four years. Think he was a little hyped for the game? Beck is a veteran, but practice can't simulate actual game play.

One thing the 'Skins can do to lift the burden on Beck is integrate more short passes. Throwing more screens and timing passes on three-step drops will get the ball out of Beck's hands before the Panther rush can reach him.

As we saw on the sack-fumble in the first quarter, leaving Beck exposed could spell disaster.

2. Stay in Rushing Lanes

So far, it seems like there isn't a defense in the NFL that can truly contain Cam Newton. But as we saw on Newton's first-drive scramble, if the defensive line loses its discipline in pursuit, Newton can really torch you.

As the Washington defensive line gets up the field, they need to stay in their lanes to close down Newton's rushing options.

3. Contain Steve Smith

Beyond Cam Newton himself, Carolina's biggest weapon is WR Steve Smith. Smith has been re-energized this season as Newton's top target, but he's not exactly a Welker-like security blanket. Smith's value comes from making big plays down the field.

Washington needs to make sure they consistently win the matchup battle against Smith, especially when he goes deep.

So far, Smith has been a non-factor. Expect Carolina to take some shots in the second half. When that happens, allowing Smith to be single covered simply won't work.

4. Keep Hitting Newton

With just one half in the books, Washington already has some memorable hits on the rookie sensation. The best defense against Cam might be to knock him out of the game. At every opportunity, the 'Skins need to hit Newton and make them count.

5. Keep Running the Ball

So far the Panthers' offense has looked anemic, but with Newton and Smith, they have big-play potential. A ball-control offense that also keeps the ball OUT of John Beck's capable but unspectacular hands is the best move for Washington.

Tim Hightower has been awesome so far, and Carolina needs more of that if they want to win the game and stay in the NFC East race.
