WWE Vengeance 2011: How Will Del Rio Keep John Cena Down for the 10-Count?

TC VreelandOct 22, 2011

This Sunday, John Cena will face Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Championship in a Last Man Standing match.  While John Cena is no stranger to this type of match, Alberto Del Rio will be traveling into uncharted territory as he looks to defend his title.

It's fairly well assumed at this point that Alberto Del Rio is planned to retain the WWE Championship on Sunday while John Cena moves his attention toward The Rock as they begin to build up their match at WrestleMania.  While anything could happen at Vengeance, I don't think that many will be surprised if Del Rio walks out of San Antonio with his belt intact.

John Cena has built up this reputation of being the toughest man in WWE, never backing down and never quitting.  I believe the last time John Cena was defeated in a Last Man Standing match was back in 2009 when Edge defeated him at Backlash.  However, it was only because of interference from Big Show that John Cena was able to be taken out.

Meanwhile, Del Rio is not the type of power wrestler who uses big moves to keep his opponents down.  His finisher is a submission maneuver, and he frequently uses quick sneak attacks to get the win.

So how exactly does Alberto Del Rio plan on keeping John Cena down?

Del Rio has a handful of options to use on Sunday, any of which could lead him to success.  He could eventually bring the match outside the ring and somehow toss Cena off of the stage or into some sort of equipment that would keep Cena immobilized long enough.  Cena himself could create his own demise by botching a finisher or other move, perhaps putting himself through a table, allowing Del Rio to pull himself up before the 10-count. Maybe The Rock will get involved, distracting Cena and allowing Del Rio to take him out from behind.

While these all seem like plausible outcomes, I think that the answer lies in a Last Man Standing match that John Cena has already participated in.

At Extreme Rules 2010, John Cena faced Batista in a Last Man Standing match for John Cena's WWE Championship.  Unable to keep Batista down with his regular arsenal of moves and attacks, John Cena grabbed a roll of duct tape and taped the downed Batista's legs to the ring post.  Batista was unable to free himself and answer the 10-count, and John Cena walked away victorious.

While I'm not saying that Alberto Del Rio is going to break out the shiny, silver tape for his match on Sunday, I don't expect him to win by knocking Cena unconscious.  There are other ways that Del Rio could trap Cena and prevent him from pulling himself to his feet, thus allowing him to pick up the victory.

Maybe Del Rio will dump a pile of ladders and tables on top of Cena, or he could use handcuffs or some other restraining device to keep Cena down.  However, I think that Del Rio already has the tool to keep Cena down, and he uses it just about every night.  I am talking about the car that he drives into the arena each night.

We've already seen one of Del Rio's automobiles take out Big Show, preventing him from walking, so why not Cena?  Sure, Big Show was "injured" and unable to stand, but the car could be used to pin Cena down in a different way, one that would prevent him from being injured but would be too much for Cena's super strength.

I think the most likely scenario is a combination of the car and another object.  Cena will be pinned down by the other object and before he can power his way out of it, Del Rio or Rodriguez will drive the car into a position that will prevent Cena from escaping.  This would give Del Rio the win without making Cena look truly beatable.

That's what I think, what do you all think?  Will Del Rio use underhanded tactics, or will he be able to knock Cena down legitimately?

Whatever the case, we'll find out on Sunday.
