BCS Standings Week 9: Kansas St. & More Undefeated Teams That Will Be Underrated

Michael DixonOct 23, 2011

The BCS rankings aren't exactly known for their consistency. Truthfully, we can only blame the computers for one-third of that. Human polls make up the remaining two-thirds.

One of the places where that inconsistency shows lies with these teams. The three of them have a combined total of zero losses. Still, with one exception, they are ranked below teams that have lost a game.

These teams have done all that can asked of them, yet are still being under appreciated. The season may show differently, but right now, these guys all have a legitimate gripe towards the system.

1. Kansas State

Despite the fact that Kansas State has handled a relatively difficult schedule without a blemish, they are ranked behind Oregon and Arkansas. Oregon and Arkansas have each lost a game this year. Yes, those losses were to good teams, but they were also convincing.

In no way should Kansas State be ranked below them. A case could be made that they still have more to prove than other unbeaten teams, but in no way should a team that already has a loss be ahead of them.

2. Houston

Houston is similar to Boise State (more on them later). They don't really have any chances to impress the pollsters with a big win. All they can do is manhandle the weaker teams they play and hope the voters are impressed.

The Cougars entered the week undefeated. Still, they were behind several teams with one loss and even Texas A&M, who has two losses.

I understand why one win from a BCS team could be seen as equal to no wins from a non-BCS team, but Texas A&M should not be ahead of Houston. Still, they will be when the rankings are released.

3. Boise State

Unlike the other teams listed, Boise State isn't behind any teams that have a loss. Still, I have a really bad feeling that the voters are going to overrate a close win against Air Force.

What I mean by overrate is that they will take the attitude that they should have beaten this team by 20 or more points. Because they didn't, it will be treated like a loss.

It's really sort of an unfortunate position for Boise State. They have to win every game they play. With maybe one or two exceptions a season, they have to dominate.

The fact of the matter is that some teams just struggle from time to time. If a team is able to win after struggling, it needs to be treated as a good thing, not a bad one.
