Pacquiao Marquez 24/7: Will Latest Feature Be as Exciting as Mayweather-Ortiz?

Ryan RudnanskyOct 22, 2011

In the world of boxing today, the promotion of a fight can often be more entertaining than the fight itself.

That wasn't more evident than when HBO released 24/7 Mayweather/Ortiz to wide acclaim only to be followed by a controversial title fight.

HBO's 24/7 series has proven to be a very effective means of promotion for the sport of boxing. And now the latest installment, Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, is likely to make some waves before the two fighters' anticipated bout on Nov. 12.

The last time the 24/7 series highlighted Pacquiao, he was getting set to face Antonio Margarito. And even though Pacquiao prefers to speak with his gloves rather than his mouth, Margarito made sure to liven up the series after his suspension for using hand wraps against Shane Mosley.

I don't expect Pacquiao/Marquez to be as dramatic as Mayweather/Ortiz, given Pacquiao's mild manner outside the ring, but for true boxing fans it could be a treat. The date of Nov. 12 will mark the third fight in a competitive series of fights between the two. Their first fight was a draw. Pacquiao won via split decision in the second bout.

Very few fighters can say they've given Pacquiao a true challenge throughout the years, but Marquez has earned the right to be honored. It's unlikely that he'll win on Nov. 12, which will only heat up the anticipation of a potential Pacquiao-Mayweather superfight, but you can bet the two fighters will put on more of a show than the dud that was Mayweather vs. Ortiz.

The 24/7 series has been so popular because of its ability to be both reality TV and a documentary, but this may be one of those rare instances when the fight lives up to the preview.

For longtime boxing fans, this is an installment you can't miss. It's a look at two fighters who have given us true heart and grit throughout the years.

The four-episode series kicks off at 10 p.m. EST/PST on Saturday.
