BCS Rankings 2011: The Most Overrated Coaches of the Top 25

Joel BarkerOct 22, 2011

Ever look at a coach roaming the sideline and wonder how in the world is this guy even remotely successful?

Whether it's pure luck or whether you suspect the coach has made an irreversible pact with the Prince of Darkness himself, some of these coaches seemingly pull wins out of their hat.

Still, there are others that are just coasting along leading teams that you'd have to be an absolute buffoon to mess up.

Here are the five most overrated coaches in the BCS Top 25.

Mike Sherman

1 of 5

Mike Sherman's Aggies team was in most preseason top-10 polls because of the amount of experienced talent returning to College Station.

After losing two consecutive games in which A&M had a double-digit first-half lead, Sherman's Aggies fell down the rankings a bit. Sure, those losses were to current top-10 teams, but talented teams should not lose games they've led by such large margins.

Sherman's been on the hotseat at A&M before, and if the Aggies underperform down the stretch, A&M could join the SEC with a new coach next season.

Dana Holgorsen

2 of 5

Dana Holgorsen was all the rage in the offseason. After taking over for Bill Stewart a year early, many thought the sky would be the limit for Holgorsen's offensive genius in year one in Morgantown.

Seven games in to his first season at West Virginia, Holgorsen hasn't done much to affirm the faith that so many put in him before he coached his first snap.

West Virginia is the most talented team in the weak Big East, but it had trouble against bottom-tier ACC program Maryland and got drubbed by 26 at Big East middling Syracuse.

Bo Pelini

3 of 5

Bo Pelini was a nice story for a couple of years at Nebraska, but his act has gotten old, fast. Pelini has the attitude of an all-time great and the coaching ability of a newbie.

His two seasons in the Big 12 were pretty good. But facing a slight step up in weekly competition in the Big Ten has proven to be an issue. In Nebraska's only big game against a top-five conference opponent this season, the 'Huskers got their doors blown off. Not to mention out of conference games against Fresno State and Wyoming that were way too close for comfort at halftime.

Mack Brown

4 of 5

Something is clearly amiss at Texas. There's never a reason for the Longhorns to go 5-7. Never. They cannot use lack of talent or lack of depth as an excuse because Brown routinely has recruits lined up at his front door begging to play for him.

With a second consecutive subpar season after a dominant decade in Austin, it appears Brown may be coaching on borrowed time.

Les Miles

5 of 5

It's all smoke and mirrors. Les Miles would be a fantastic magician or even a successful pro-gambler, but an excellent head football coach he is not.

Sure, he has incredible assistant coaches, and he and the staff can recruit like nobody's business, but make no mistake about it, Les Miles is not the genius people think he is.

He takes chances, gets lucky and wins. This season, even he couldn't goof it up with the talent on that LSU roster.
