Auburn vs LSU: 5 Things We Learned About the Tigers Win vs. Auburn

Matt ShetlerOct 22, 2011

The matchup of the defending BCS Champions in Auburn against the team looking to become the next BCS champions in LSU turned out to be a laugher as LSU clobbered the the Tigers 45-10 on Saturday.

Not having running back Spencer Ware and cornerbacks Tyrann Mathieu and Tharold Simon, who were suspended after testing positive for synthetic marijuana, turned out to be no problem at all for LSU.

By winning, it sets LSU up for the Game of the Year on November 5 when they travel to Alabama with everything at stake.

Les Miles Has LSU Focused on the Task at Hand

1 of 5

It's been a turbulent season for LSU, beginning with the early season suspension of quarterback Jordan Jefferson and the most recent suspensions of Ware, Mathieu and Simon.

The Tigers could have fallen apart early on, but Miles keeps this team focused.

The Auburn game could have been a trap game with the Alabama game looming, but Miles won't let this team look too far ahead.

He will have them ready for Alabama.

The LSU Defense Smells Blood

2 of 5

Give the LSU defense an inch and they will take a mile, especially against a young quarterback.

The Tigers came after Auburn quarterback Clint Moseley on almost every play, sacking the sophomore six times and scoring a touchdown on a Ron Brooks pick six.

Considering that the performance the defense turned in was without Mathieu, probably their best player, the LSU defense is playing at a tremendously high level at the right time.

Depth, Depth, Depth

3 of 5

Ask any coach and the most important thing he wants heading into a season is depth at every position.

LSU not only has that, they have quality depth at every position. The talent level is so high that it almost doesn't matter who Miles plugs into key spots, they are producing positive results right now.

The Tigers have shown that depth all season, and they are going to need to use it come November 5.

LSU's Special Teams Are Indeed Special

4 of 5

Much is made of the LSU special teams, who always have a good kicker, punter and return game, but their coverage units don't get enough credit.

The numerous amount of bit hits on special teams and the average starting field position swings almost every game LSU's way.

If every time the opposition gets the ball they have a long field to deal with, then a team with a defense as good as LSU's will thrive.

Let the Hype Begin

5 of 5

Before, during and after the game, the LSU student section chanted "We Want Bama."

Well, you're going to get them in two weeks.

Similar to the two week gap in between the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl, expect there to be a lot of hype and story lines leading up to what looks to be the game of the year in college football.

Miles has LSU ready and expect the next two weeks to be a chess match in the media between two of the games best coaches.

Also expect Miles to have something up his sleeve for this one.  He kept the playbook relatively simple today, and we didn't see a whole lot of Jefferson.

Give Miles two weeks to prepare for an opponent and the Mad Hatter will be ready.

Very few games live up to the hype. LSU vs. Alabama is one of those that just might.
