Jackie Battle Fantasy: Kansas City RB a Smart Start on Sunday

Austin GreenOct 22, 2011

Kansas City running back Jackie Battle burst onto the scene in Week 5 against Indianapolis and I expect similar success for him against Oakland on Sunday.

Battle had a minor neck injury, but following a bye week, should be ready to go against the Raiders. He is currently listed as probable.

The 28-year-old back out of Houston had just 10 carries combined in the first four games of the season, but was given the bulk of the carries against the Colts.

He didn't disappoint, running for 119 yards on 19 tries (6.3 yards per carry). He also caught two passes for 21 yards. He wasn't able to find the endzone, but he was still a major part of the Chiefs 28-24 victory.

Battle's running style is as violent as his name, as he just crushed Indy defenders all day in Week 5. He has a very effective bruising, downhill style that should make football purists proud.

He also has the complete confidence of his teammates.

“He’s a great running back, a tough runner and he’s a great part of this team,” wide receiver Dwayne Bowe said. “We need him.”

Quarterback Matt Cassel had some nice things to Battle as well.

“He continues to show up week in and week out and there’s never a time when I’ve seen him get hit where he doesn’t somehow fall forward,” Cassel said. “He’s done a great job for us and hopefully he’ll continue (to) grow in this offense.”

All of this praise is for a guy who, prior to the Colts game, had just 155 rushing yards in four seasons and was primarily used on special teams.

Clearly his teammates believe in him and fantasy owners should as well. Give Battle the start in Week 7.
