NFL Power Rankings: San Diego Chargers and Teams That Will Start Free Falling

Richard LangfordOct 22, 2011

The San Diego Chargers are ready to embark on a voyage that sends them down the rankings. Their schedule is about to get harder and they are not as good as their ranking suggests. They are not the only team in this position.

Here is some music for our free fallers.

No. 7 San Diego Chargers

The notoriously slow-starting Chargers are off to their best start in years at 4-1. However, the Chargers have proved that it is better to look worse in winning than they did in losing.

This passing offense is not nearly as sharp as it has been in recent history and the run defense is soft. They are winning because it would be almost impossible for them not to.

The four teams they have beaten have combined for just four wins this season. Their schedule is about to get a lot tougher, and they are not good enough to withstand it.

No. 11 New York Giants

The Giants' free fall isn't going to start right away. That much is guaranteed. They are on a bye for the next two weeks; this week is their official bye, and next week they play the Dolphins.

Week 9 is when their free fall will start. The Giants are a flawed team. They can't run the ball or defend the pass, and they will play at the Patriots and then at the 49ers following the Dolphins.

Their schedule doesn't get much easier after that, either.

No. 14 Chicago Bears

The Bears have climbed to a 3-3 record largely by playing three fairly easy games at home. They are 0-2 on the road this season, and their next two games come on the road against the Buccaneers and Eagles.

They will then return home for games against the Lions and Chargers. I would be shocked if they won more than one of these games.
