NFL Picks Week 7: New York Jets and Underdogs Who Will Stun Their Opponents

Matt FaulconerOct 22, 2011

The New York Jets are going to silence Vegas oddsmakers this week when they stun the San Diego Chargers.

Betting on a West Coast team that is heading east for a 1 p.m. game is always tough, and you should avoid the Chargers like the plague this week.

The Jets' offense hasn't been very good this year, and their defense has given up plenty of yards on the ground. That doesn't mean they aren't going to knock off San Diego though. They are 3-0 this season at home with victories over the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars. San Diego is just 1-1 on the road this year, with their victory coming against the Denver Broncos. Their loss came on the East Coast against the New England Patriots.

Betting the Jets, who are currently two-point underdogs, is extremely obvious.

Philip Rivers is off to a very inconsistent start this season. He has thrown just two touchdowns in the teams last two games. San Diego's run game has carried them this year, but look for Gang Green to put an extra man in the box to slow that down.

With Darrelle Revis shutting down Vincent Jackson, it's going to be impossible for the Chargers to get a victory.

Washington Redskins

The Redskins are being written off with John Beck starting this week, but the QB position is irrelevant for Washington.

The 'Skins simply need their QB to not turn the ball over too much, something that Rex Grossman couldn't handle.

Their defense is one of the best in the NFL, and are going to shut down rookie sensation Cam Newton. They have the No. 9 pass defense in the NFL and the No. 11 run defense in the NFL.

Newton is going to get pressure in his face non-stop in this game, especially with RT Jeff Otah out for the season. Washington is going blitz Ryan Kerrigan around the corner a ton in this game, and it's going to be very difficult for Carolina to contain both him and Brian Orakpo.

Look for the Redskins to run the ball a ton in this game with the three-headed monster of Ryan Torain, Roy Helu and Tim Hightower to dominate on the ground against the 31st-ranked run defense in the NFL.

Carolina might be favored, but the Burgundy and Gold will head back to Washington victorious.

The Falcons have to come away with a victory this week, or they are going to be all but done for in the NFC South.

They will step up and take advantage of the recently exposed Detroit Lions.

Detroit has proved to be a very good team this year, but they have yet to show that they are the elite team they want to become this year.

Michael Turner is going to be called upon to carry the Falcons to victory, and he won't disappoint. After three consecutive disappointing games, he rose to the occasion last week against the Panthers.

The Lions are conceding nearly 130 yards per game on the ground, which means Turner should have plenty of holes to run through. Expect Atlanta to hand the ball off a ton in this game, which will keep the explosive Calvin Johnson on the sideline.

If the Falcons can keep their defense fresh by dominating time of possession they have a legitimate chance of taking down Detroit.

Another major problem for the Lions is that they will have no run game. With Jahvid Best likely out of the game, don't expect a dominating run game from Detroit.

This one should stay close for much of the game, but Atlanta's ferocious run game will spell defeat for the 5-1 Lions.
