Week 7 Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Matt Schaub and More QBs You Must Bench

Matt FaulconerOct 22, 2011

Benching Matt Schaub is becoming a weekly ritual that isn't going anywhere until Andre Johnson comes back from injury. Schaub is nothing without his star WR, and his matchup against the Tennessee Titans makes him very avoidable.

In Schaub's last three games, he has only topped 250 yards once. During that same span, he has thrown just four touchdowns and has added a pair of interceptions. Those games weren't easy, as they played the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens in two of them.

The Titans' pass defense ranks 12th in the league, and they are holding opponents to under 225 yards passing per game. That doesn't bode well for the struggling Schaub, who is going to cost your fantasy team another victory this week.

Leave Schaub on your bench until Johnson returns from his injury.

Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers)

Rivers has been a huge disappointment this year, and he deserves nothing but the bench this week.

Rivers is just the 17th best fantasy QB this year and has far from lived up to his preseason top five status. It's quite shocking to see Rivers performing so inadequately this season, especially with Vincent Jackson back in the fold.

In his last three games, he has thrown for just two touchdowns and three interceptions. Those numbers should be quite scary with a tough matchup looming on the horizon.

It's possible that he is missing Antonio Gates, but either way, he should be left on the bench. The New York Jets have a way of shutting down nearly every offense that comes their way, and they will find a way to do the same against the Chargers.

Add in that Rivers has to travel east for a 1 p.m. game, and the writing is on the wall for a meltdown in the Big Apple.

Kevin Kolb (Arizona Cardinals)

If you thought Kolb was going to be a sleeper this year—raise your hand.

Don't worry, you weren't the only one.

The Kolb experiment in Arizona has been a disaster thus far. He has just one touchdown in his last three games while throwing five interceptions.

To make matters worse, he faces the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. Excited yet? Didn't think so.

Pittsburgh has the No. 1-ranked pass defense in the NFL. They are conceding less than 160 yards per game through the air and are likely licking their chops to get a piece of Kolb this weekend.

Kolb will fail again this week, so don't get cute by inserting him in your lineup. You're better off adding Tim Tebow this week.
