BCS Rankings: Boise State Has Clear Path to BCS Title Game

T.J. McaloonOct 24, 2011

The song by Johnny Nash, “I Can See Clearly Now,” should be playing on every single radio station either around the Boise State campus or in the city of Boise, Idaho. Because with the loss to Oklahoma and Wisconsin on Saturday night, it opens up a clear path for the Broncos to the BCS National Title game.

Before the second BCS standings came out, Boise State sat ahead of Wisconsin but behind Oklahoma. However, with Wisconsin’s strength of schedule, they were in danger of being jumped over by the Badgers.

Now, none of that matters, as with a loss to Michigan State, the threat of being passed over by the Big Ten school is now gone.

As I wrote in a piece over the weekend, detailing how each of the Top 10 teams could make the BCS title game, I pointed out that Boise State needed to have one of the top Four teams suffer a loss before each of them played each other.

Boise either had to have LSU or Alabama lose a game either before their meeting on November 5th, or afterwards, depending on who won or lost that game.

But now with the loss to Oklahoma on Saturday to Texas Tech, it does not matter what LSU or Alabama does after their epic game in two weeks.

If Alabama wins and then goes on to roll over Auburn and the SEC East champion, it won’t impede Boise State from the BCS title game.

The same goes for LSU if they win and then go on to win their remaining games on their schedule.

Either way, Boise State will get into the title game because of that Oklahoma loss.

However, this clear path still has one big road block in the way.

That road block is the Oklahoma State Cowboys and a meeting with Oklahoma in Stillwater on December 3rd.

Over the years, OU has dominated this rivalry with their in-state partners. It seems like no matter how good of a team Oklahoma State has, they just cannot get over the hump and beat the Sooners.

Because of this inability to beat their rivals, it will lead to a Boise State BCS championship game in New Orleans against the winner of the LSU and Alabama game.

Just like Johnny Nash said, “Look straight ahead, it’s nothing but blue skies." It looks like the Boise State Broncos are finally going to get a chance to play for the BCS National Championship.
