New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft Right to Criticize "Suck for Luck"

Eric BowmanOct 21, 2011

There's a phenomenon sweeping the nation right now known as the "Suck for Luck" sweepstakes, and it has caused several people to go crazy, including fans, players and NFL owners.

In order to win this sweepstakes, you must be an NFL team willing to tank your season to ensure you have the 2012 No. 1 overall draft pick.

The "Suck for Luck" campaign is all about Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, who is being touted as the next great NFL quarterback. It is believed he will be the savior of a franchise, which prompted the whole idea about being awful now, so you can be better later.

Several people have voiced their displeasure about this latest craze, but most recently was one of the most beloved and respected owners in the NFL today.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked what he thought about the move, and Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe tweeted his response.

Kraft is spot-on to say that losing on purpose is a poor way to go about running an NFL team, and while I don't think there's a team out there intentionally losing, it's not going to go away.

Not everyone likes this idea, and it certainly is driven by the media. After all, it's a hot topic, and since there are three NFL teams who have yet to win a game, the "Suck for Luck" campaign is alive and well.

No team should ever lose on purpose, because it takes the fun out of the game. These players get a ton of money to play, and some are competing for jobs in contract years, which means forcing one of those players to be awful on purpose is just wrong.

Kraft has every right to criticize the idea, but he didn't help himself by saying he'd accept the philosophy of losing if it were just the final game of the season.

He may not like the idea, but it's very clear that he'd still do whatever it took to get the No. 1 pick if he were the owner of a losing team. Fortunately for Kraft, he is not apart of a losing franchise because that would make him a bad owner, which he is far from being.

If Kraft is willing to drop the final game, then you have to know other owners are thinking the same thing. The question is, are the St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts thinking the same thing?

According to one of the most famous Dolphins' players, they aren't even thinking about sucking for Luck. Per Jeff Darlington's Twitter

It's hard not to laugh at that because it's so true. The Dolphins are not a very good team, and they look to be the favorites of landing Luck.

The "Suck for Luck" campaign will remain all season whether folks like it or not. In fact, Andrew Luck doesn't even like it, telling the New York Times, "I am aware of it. A couple of guys told me about it. I think it’s stupid. Simply put.”

This spectacle will continue to create buzz around the NFL all season, even if the Rams, Colts and Dolphins finally win a game.

When there's a player being called the next Peyton Manning, it's hard not to keep talking about it all year.
