BCS Rankings 2011: LSU vs. Alabama Set as Unofficial BCS Championship

Gabe ZaldivarOct 21, 2011

We sit and wait, with nothing to do but be good and patient college football fans. Make no mistake, the nation can hardly wait to see the title game taking place only a couple weeks from now.

I know that we have to wait until January until the official BCS Championship game, but there is one taking place months before then that we have all targeted as a must see event.

Alabama and LSU are set to tee off against one another on November 5th. That is the day when the No. 1 and 2 teams in the nation face off.

We will be promised to see two teams with a bevy of future NFL players clash in a defensive performance that would make any football fan proud.

But first, we have to get through this weekend off slough. It is Christmas Eve, and I can't wait for the clock to strike midnight. Every second seems to tick slower than the last as we wait for assured wins this weekend.

LSU will take on an Auburn team that is much better than we thought it would be at the beginning of the season. You can bet that the recent suspensions to star players Tyrann Mathieu, Tharold Simon and tailback Spencer Ware will affect the Tigers.

But LSU is deep and should still control the pace of the game from start to finish. There is also no reason to worry about Alabama in their cakewalk on Saturday.

You never want to underestimate an opponent, but the Volunteers have not seen a defense like Alabama's. By the end of the day, we will have exactly what we thought we would, a No. 1 and No. 2 that look exactly as they now.

For the first half of the season, both LSU and Alabama have been my sure-fire top of the heap teams. I have no problem with where they sit now atop the BCS. The shame is that they have to do battle in November instead of January.

One of those teams will lose on the 5th, and then continue to steamroll the competition after that. At that point, we will realize that we just witnessed a title game.

Savor every last bit, because there will be no greater game than the one played between Alabama and LSU.
