NFL Week 7 Picks: Atlanta Falcons and Teams Whose Playoff Hopes Will Be Squashed

If a surprising team is going to make the playoffs, one thing needs to happen: At least one team that was expected to make the playoffs is not going to make it.

It's just simple math, really. There are only six playoff spots per conference, and four of those go to division winners. 

These teams all made the playoffs last year. Two of them made their conference's championship game, and another had the best record in their conference.

Still, 2011 is a different year. All three of these teams sit at 3-3 right now. All three will be 3-4 at this time next week. While it's still early, none will overcome the bad starts. All will be watching the playoffs from home.

New York Jets

On the one hand, how can anyone count this defense out so early into the season? Well, I am not counting the defense out, but the offense is just abysmal.

It's not that I am predicting a record-setting day from Philip Rivers or the San Diego offense, but I can't see the Jets shutting them down.

The Jets offense simply won't keep up.

Chicago Bears

This is the team that I am least sure of, but that's not saying much. Jay Cutler is much better than he's given credit for, but the problems with the Bears are glaring.

They simply don't protect Cutler. On most plays, he's either hit too early or forced to throw too early.

The Buccaneers are actually a good team. The 48-3 loss to the 49ers was completely wiped out by a great win over the Saints.

The Buccaneers will stay in good shape in England, while the Bears will be sent into a deep hole.

Atlanta Falcons

I simply just can't see the Falcons defense doing anywhere near as well against Detroit as the 49ers' did.

While Michael Turner will have a good game, Atlanta won't come anywhere near outscoring the high-powered Lions.
