Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Week 14

Michael WhooleyDec 7, 2008

Here’s hoping the first round of the fantasy football playoffs went well for you. If you just scraped by and are looking for an upgrade at a certain position, or if you’re just looking to improve your depth, then here’s another installment of the weekly waiver wire to help you out.

--------------------

RUNNING BACKS

Pierre Thomas (New Orleans Saints)

Pierre Thomas has been a factor for New Orleans in the team’s last four games. In those games, Thomas has rushed 58 times for 307 yards and four touchdowns and has received 11 or more carries in each game.

Furthermore he’s also been involved in the passing game with 21 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns on the season. Even with running back Reggie Bush back in the fold, Thomas went for 102 rushing yards and two TDs this past weekend. He is worth a look as a flex option or a RB2 in deeper leagues.

Tashard Choice (Dallas Cowboys)

With Marion Barber out, rookie Tashard Choice got the start against the Pittsburgh Steelers and impressed with 88 yards on 23 carries and 78 receiving yards on five receptions. The last two weeks Choice has received 11 or more carries and on the season he’s averaged 4.4 yards a carry.

Even if Barber returns this week, Choice should still see 10 carries, so he’s worth a look in deeper leagues.

--------------------

Tatum Bell (Denver Broncos)

Despite being cut from the Detroit Lions, then caught stealing Rudi Johnson’s duffel bags, Tatum Bell has found a job again and it’s with his original team in the Denver Broncos. This past weekend against Kansas City, with Peyton Hillis banged up, he rushed 11 times for 52 yards and caught two passes for 16 yards.

Hillis is still the better play if healthy, but Bell should see 10 or more carries a game for the rest of the season.

--------------------

WIDE RECEIVERS

Kevin Walter (Houston Texans)

Houston Texans receiver Kevin Walter has been playing really well this season and is on the path to a career year. On the year, he’s got 55 receptions for 851 yards with eight touchdowns, three of those in the last five games. Now that starting quarterback Matt Schaub is back from injury, Walter should finish out the season strong.

--------------------

Davone Bess (Miami Dolphins)

It’s hard for us to advise anybody to pick up a rookie receiver, but Davone Bess has been pretty good in the last three games, stepping in for the injured Greg Camarillo. In those games, Bess has caught 24 passes for 145 yards. The only downside to Bess is that he’s caught just one touchdown pass on the season.

Still, he is clearly going to be involved in the passing game the rest of the season and is worth a look in deeper leagues.

--------------------

KICKERS

Garrett Hartley (New Orleans Saints)

Any kicker behind a high-powered offense is worth having on a fantasy football team and that’s certainly the case with Garrett Hartley, a rookie from Oklahoma. Hartley has hit all 11 field goal attempts he's had on the season with a long of 47. Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hartley hit all three field goals and both extra point attempts he was given. He’s worth owning in any size fantasy league.

DEFENSES/SPECIAL TEAMS

Cincinnati Bengals

Discussing defensive matchups was a hot topic on the forum this week and while the good defenses are certainly gone in your league, you can get by with bad ones just by playing the matchups. In Week 16, the Cincinnati Bengals will play the Cleveland Browns, a good matchup for the Bengals for a few reasons.

First of all, the Browns are down to third string quarterback Ken Dorsey, who doesn’t complete a lot of passes and is interception prone. Secondly, for whatever reason the Browns have quit running the ball, which is the Bengals’ biggest weakness.

If you’re desperate, the Bengals defense is a good play in Week 16.
